Cole, Carlson, Butera Among Local Headliners

Jada Cole (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake) and Kealy Caflisch (Jamestown/Frewsburg) are freshmen members of the Edinboro University women’s soccer team.

In seven games for the 4-3 Fighting Scots, Cole leads in scoring with eight goals and one assist. Three of the goals were game winners.

Tight end Stephen Carlson (Jamestown/Jamestown) made his 2025 NFL regular-season debut in the Chicago Bears’ Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He played a total of 15 snaps (10 on offense and five on special teams).

According to online reports, he was filling in for Colston Loveland, who was out with a hip injury. Loveland will have additional time to recover, thanks to the Week 5 bye, so Carlson will likely remain on the practice squad for the Bears’ Week 6 game against Washington on Monday, Oct. 13.

Gaven Johnson, son of Jamestown native Chris Johnson and grandson of Jamestown resident Lee Johnson, was named a 2024-25 High School Boys Soccer Scholar All-American.

Gaven, a midfielder from Harrison, Ohio who sported a 4.57 grade-point average, was among 45 seniors honored based on cumulative achievement in the classroom as well as on the soccer field during their secondary school careers.

Jaylen Butera (Jamestown/Jamestown) is a running back for the University of Charleston (West Virginia) football team this season.

In three games played — he missed the last two with an injury — the former Post-Journal/OBSERVER Player of the Year and first-team all-state running back — has rushed for 246 yards on 42 carries and one touchdown.

The Golden Eagles (3-2, 2-0) will be back in action on Oct. 11 at Wheeling University.

Kylie O’Brien (Jamestown/Jamestown) is a junior on the SUNY Fredonia women’s volleyball team.

In 14 matches for far this season, she has collected 48 sets, 90 kills and 368 total attacks. The Blue Devils are 5-10.

Eve Adams (Cattaraugus/Randolph) is a member of the University at Buffalo women’s volleyball team.

In 11 matches for the 3-8 Bulls, the sophomore has collected 13 points and three assists.

Matt Lotter (Fredonia/Fredonia) is a senior linebacker for the SUNY Cortland football team. In four games this fall, the 6-foot, 225-pounder has accumulated eight solo tackles, 10 assists and two tackles for loss.

Other area student-athletes on the team, which is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, are sophomore defensive lineman Owen Rush (Fredonia/Fredonia) and junior linebacker Sean O’Brien (Jamestown/Jamestown).

Nick Whitfield (Fredonia/Fredonia) is a redshirt junior quarterback on the Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) University football team.

In five games, Whitfield has completed 96 of 149 passes for 954 yards and two touchdowns. He has been intercepted six times.

The Red Flash are 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference, heading into Saturday’s game against Duquesne.

Colin Melendez (Jamestown/Jamestown) is a tight end on the Mercyhurst University football team.

The 6-foot-3, 243-pound sophomore has four receptions for 32 yards for the Lakers (1-3).

Trey Drake (Jamestown/Jamestown) is a sophomore quarterback on the North Dakota State University football team, which is the top-ranked team in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Drake, a recipient of the 2024 Missouri Valley Football Conference Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award, has seen action in two games so far this season for the Bison (4-1, 1-0).

Nate Milne (Jamestown/Jamestown) is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Muhlenberg (Pennsylvania) College football team.

By winning its first three games, Milne’s career record is 63-13, including three Centennial Conference championships.

Mike Sirianni (Jamestown/Southwestern) is in his 23rd season as the head coach of the Washington & Jefferson (Pennsylvania) College football team.

After starting the season 0-2, the Presidents knocked off 14th-ranked Grove City 34-14 last Saturday to improve Sirianni’s career record to 195-48.

Southwestern’s Braelynn Dykstra and Ida Malmstrom Jouannet are members of the Erie Lady Otters 14/16U hockey team that won the Queen City Showdown 25 in Cincinnati last Sunday.

The Otters opened the tournament on Friday by downing the Chesterfield Lady Falcons 11-1 and then on Saturday they defeated the St. Louis Lady Cyclones 6-5 and the Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones 5-0.

In the title game on Sunday, the Otters rolled to an 8-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Darien Swanson (Westfield/Westfield) is a senior on the Mercyhurst University golf team.

On Tuesday, in the final round of the Virtues Intercollegiate (hosted by Miami of Ohio), he shot a 2-under 70, carding four birdies and a bogey-free front nine.

In his other two rounds in the tournament, Swanson shot an 82 and a 77.
