The Jamestown Community College hockey team remained perfect at Northwest Arena with a 7-4 win over SUNY Geneseo in Upstate New York Club Hockey League Division 3 West action Saturday night.
JCC came out with the throttle stuck to the floor, with Cooper Bergman scoring the first goal at 15:58. He was assisted by Malik Powell and Noah Kellogg.
Jamestown’s lead doubled 10 minutes later when Kellogg went on a personal 3-0 run to pot his first career hat trick and give the Jayhawks a 4-0 lead. He scored the other two goals in the second period, both on the power play.
Geneseo brought the score to 4-1 early in the third, but Meyer Talbett and Bergan Nelson each lit the lamp to push the JCC edge to 6-1 before Jamestown got a little lackadaisical late to see a final of 7-4 after Daniel Young put home an empty-netter.
The victory moves JCC to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 at home.
Jamestown hits the road on Friday at 8:30 p.m. to battle Canisius University, a team they beat 7-6 at home earlier in the year.
MEN’S SOCCER
BRADFORD, Pa. — If once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a trend, then the Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team has made it a trend to beat the buzzer this season, the latest being a 3-2 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Sunday.
This game didn’t start out like it was going to come down to a game-winner. JCC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Alfie Moynihan and Sam Hynes, both before the 15-minute mark.
That score held into the second half before the Panthers added a pair of their own to make it a 2-2 game.
It remained 2-2 until JCC broke loose with 10 seconds on the clock. The entire Jayhawks’ 11 went on the run after they stole the ball from Pitt-Bradford. It ended with Liam Doyle just outside the box, who found a streaking Jack Morris. From there, Morris blasted a point-blank shot past the goalie as the horn sounded. The buzzer-beating game-winner trickled beyond the line with less than one second on the clock to make it 3-2.
The win moves the Jayhawks to 8-5 on the season.
Jamestown returns to Region 3 play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they visit SUNY Broome.
VOLLEYBALL
BATAVIA — The Jamestown Community College volleyball team had high hopes and expectations as they traveled to Genesee Community College for their POD on Sunday afternoon, but Erie Community College and SUNY Niagara had other ideas once they took the court.
JCC fell to Erie 3-0, as the ladies struggled to get their footing after dropping the first set 25-8. The Jayhawks battled closer in the other two sets but lost those 25-17 and 25-15.
All three sets to SUNY Niagara had the same theme. Jamestown lost 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14, with JCC being their own worst enemy with 19 unforced errors.
The ladies now sit at 2-12 on the season.
They hope to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College for their pod.
CROSS COUNTRY
FREDONIA — The Jamestown Community College runners competed in the Kara Hall Memorial XC Invite on Saturday morning.
The women hit the course first, with Aubrey MacDonald and Arryanna Bardo competing in their first ever 6K.
“Despite the warm weather and the added distance, they both held their own against some very stiff competition,” said head coach Darion Gregory.
Bardo came through in 31:00 and placed 58th overall. MacDonald wasn’t too far behind with a 33:22 and placed 66th.
“Both women are showing tremendous improvement week after week and showcasing a strong competitive spirit,” added Gregory.
On the men’s side, Carson Dunn ran the 8K in 34:47 and placed 100th.
“Carson (Dunn) continues to race with maturity and confidence,” said Gregory. “The team walked away from this meet with a lot of good lessons in training and racing strategies.”
JCC is back in action Saturday for the Highlander Invite at Houghton College.
