Jayhawks Knock Off Nationally Ranked Herkimer

HERKIMER — It was arguably the biggest regular-season win in Jamestown Community College men’s soccer history when the Jayhawks toppled NJCAA Division III No. 5 Herkimer 2-1 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied 0-0 heading into halftime with Theo Merlin keeping the clean sheet for Jamestown going to the break.

Herkimer broke the scoreless tie in the 48th minute when Kai Bell was able to beat the Jayhawks’ freshman for a 1-0 advantage.

That score held until the 73rd minute when JCC sophomore Braidan Govan evened things up off of a pass from Casimiro Espeso Gayt, and just like that, the Jayhawks could smell an upset brewing.

The enormous victory came into focus just two minutes after Govan tied it when Liam Doyle was able to find Luca Marini, and the Irishman didn’t miss from just outside the box to give JCC a 2-1 edge.

Merlin was perfect after allowing the first goal to secure the 2-1 win.

The victory moved JCC to 10-5 on the season and 7-3 in Region 3 action.

It’s another tough test up next for Jamestown as they host No. 2 Finger Lakes CC on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Jamestown Community College continues to lead by example when it comes to community outreach and involvement.

The latest example was the Jayhawks their annual Pink the Rink night Saturday to raise funds for local breast cancer care at UPMC Chautauqua.

After dropping their Upstate New York Collegiate Hockey League game at Canisius University 7-2 on Friday night, the Jayhawks looked like they were primed for a home-and-home split Saturday.

JCC opened the scoring when Noah Kellogg lit the lamp just five minutes into the first period for a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 4-1 in the second on a pair of goals from Garret Greaves and another from Nate Stephens.

In the third, the Jayhawks started to fill the penalty box, which helped in their lead evaporating.

Jamestown quickly allowed three goals from the Griffs to see the game tied 4-4 midway through the final period.

JCC jumped back on top when Kellogg found Bergman Nelson to give the Jayhawks a 5-4 edge.

From there it was all Canisius, as they scored the final two goals of the game for a 6-5 win at Northwest Arena.

The losses put JCC at 3-3 on the season.

It’s another busy weekend ahead for the Jayhawks; they visit Mercyhurst University on Friday at 9 p.m. They are back on home ice on Saturday at 7 p.m., with Penn State Behrend in town.

CROSS COUNTRY

HOUGHTON — Rain and wind couldn’t slow down the Jamestown Community College cross country team, with the trio of Jayhawks making the trip to Houghton College for the Highlander Invitational Saturday morning.

On the women’s side, Arryanna Bardo ran a 28:27 in the 8K and placed 161 out of 188. This is over two and a half minutes faster than what she ran last weekend at Fredonia State University for the Pre-Regional Meet. Aubrey MacDonald ran a 32:01 and placed 177 out of 188. That’s one minute and 27 seconds faster than last week.

“Week after week these girls improve and beat better runners,” said head coach Darion Gregory.

For the men, Carson Dunn ran 32:25 and placed 197 out of 213. This is a breakout race for Carson, improving over a minute on his PR and cutting over two minutes off his time from last week.

“The whole team competed extremely well today. I saw a laser focus and intense competitive drive from all the runners. This race puts us in a good position to run well at the regional meet,” added Gregory.

That regional meet takes place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Herkimer College.

Starting at $3.50/week.
