Jayhawks Fall In Region 3 Semifinals
UTICA — The Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team left it all on the field of Utica University on Thursday, but came home with a 4-1 loss in the NJCAA Region 3 Division III semifinals against No. 4 Mohawk Valley CC.
It was an evenly played first half, with neither team being able to find the back of the net. The Jayhawks’ Theo Merlin was spectacular in net before the break, making three point-blank saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Jamestown CC had a beautiful opportunity in the 48th minute to score the game’s first goal; a trio of Jayhawks got a touch inside the box but couldn’t score the all-important first tally.
Mohawk Valley CC broke the scoreless tie in the 54th minute, when it was able to break beyond the defense and open the scoring.
The Jayhawks’ deficit doubled eight minutes later, with Mohawk Valley CC once again getting a numbers advantage to drive home a 2-0 lead.
Jamestown CC didn’t go down without a fight. In the 65th minute Casimiro Espeso Gayte drew the Jayhawks within one as he blasted home a net-front opportunity to make it 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, it was all Mohawk Valley CC after that, scoring in the 79th and 83rd minutes.
Retiring Jamestown CC coach Pat Anderson directed one of the best years in program history. The 12 wins (12-7-1 overall record) are the most since 2012, when records were first recorded.
