Jayhawks Advance To Men’s Soccer Regional Semifinal

FALCONER — They don’t ask how, but how many, and after Saturday night, Jamestown Community College men’s soccer has another playoff win under its belt, topping Tompkins Cortland CC 4-3 in an NJCAA Division III Region 3 North B District opening-round game on the turf at Falconer Central School’s Bill Race Field.

Almost before fans could find their seats, No. 6 JCC found the back of the net when sophomore Shane Bennett connected with freshman Sam Hynes just 14 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Jamestown advantage.

The lead didn’t last long. No. 11 TCCC was able to earn the equalizer just seven minutes later, setting the stage for a back-and-forth 90 minutes of soccer.

That 1-1 tie lasted all the way through halftime and into the 57th minute, when TCCC captured its first lead of the game.

The homestanding Jayhawks wasted no time tying the game back up as freshman Luca Marini found his captain Shane Bennett, whose goal squared the contest at 2-2 less than four minutes later.

There was no time to celebrate the tie, as Jamestown immediately reclaimed the lead. It was a freshman-to-freshman connection with Liam Doyle getting the helper to Hynes for his second of the game, with JCC taking a 3-2 lead at the 62nd minute.

The 3-2 score held up to the 87th minute, where Liam Doyle, who earlier had a close goal called back on an offside, let all his emotion out as he buried a blistering shot one-on-one with the goalie. He was sent all alone on a beauty of an assist from sophomore Braidan Govan, which turned out to be important insurance for the Jayhawks to go up 4-2.

That insurance was a life-saver when TCCC was able to draw within one again just seconds later at 4-3 still in the 87th minute.

From there, JCC played keep away to capture a one-goal win and move on to the regional semis, which will take place today against No. 3 Mohawk Valley CC at noon at Utica University. The other North B District semifinal features No. 7 Herkimer College and No. 2 Cayuga CC at 6 p.m.

The regional final is set for Saturday at Genesee CC.

Doyle is a defensive specialist for JCC. He has one goal for two points in his 14 games. Gayte has scored three goals, with 11 assists for a team-high 17 points in 12 games.

CROSS COUNTRY

HERKIMER — The cold temperatures couldn’t extinguish a pair of brilliant runs by the Jamestown Community College cross country teams as they took part in the Region 3 championship Saturday.

Starting with the ladies, Arryanna Bardo placed sixth out of 25, running a 25:30 in the 5K. The sophomore cut almost two minutes from her time on the same course as a month ago. Bardo’s sixth-place finish awarded her all-region honors for being in the top 10 of the event.

“Arryanna’s improvements over the season have been remarkable,” Jayhawks coach Darion Gregory said. “From just starting in the sport of cross country a little over a month ago to now receiving all-region honors is beyond impressive and is a testament to her hard work and talent.”

In the men’s race, Carson Dunn ran the 8K in 32:08 and placed 14th out of 43. This is a 20-second personal best on the hardest course the Jayhawks run. Dunn also had a five-minute improvement from the time he ran on the same course as a month ago.

“Carson ran a very smart and tactical race today,” Gregory said. “He finished ahead of several runners that have routinely beaten us all season.”

Bardo and Dunn both earned all-conference recognition for finishing inside the five in their respective divisions.

“Today, to my knowledge, Carson had the best regional place finish in JCC history, and Arryanna ran the fastest regional time in JCC history,” Gregory said.

Bardo also claimed a spot at nationals with her strong performance.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SANBORN — It wasn’t for a lack of effort, but the Jamestown Community College volleyball team’s season came to an end Saturday, falling to Erie CC 3-1 in the WNYAC tournament.

JCC dropped the opening set 25-14 but bounced right back by taking set two 25-18, evening play at one set apiece.

From there the Kats were able to win the next two sets 25-14 and 25-21 to end JCC’s year.

Jamestown was able to place a pair of players on the all-conference teams, with Payton Lewis earning her spot for the second straight year, while freshman Brittany Colon received the recognition in her first chance.

Starting at $3.50/week.
