Hilliker Wins 13th Travel League Event Of Year
VENANGO, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League headed south to Venango Valley Golf Course, avoiding the heavy rains falling throughout Chautauqua County.
Josh Hilliker won his league-best 13th event with the low round of 76. Ed Tofil finished second with 79. Jeff Nelson and Tom Sacilowski tied for third with 85s. Hilliker led the front nine with 37 and Nelson led the back nine with 38. Hilliker also earned his 60th career tour victory, fourth-most all-time.
Dave Franklin was the B Flight winner, moving into a tie with Dave Criscione and Pat Weaver for second place all-time with 38 B Flight wins. The low round by a senior was shot by Jack Hood, who was also the winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award. Gary Haase became the sixth golfer in league history to play in 400 events.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Hilliker (Nos. 2, 6, 7, 17), Tofil (No. 14) and Nelson (No. 18); B Flight — Phil Maslak (No. 5), Franklin (No. 6), John Waterman (Nos. 7, 11) and Hood (No. 10).
Closest to the pin were: Sacilowski (Nos. 4, 16), Waterman (No. 11) and Franklin (No. 13). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tofil in the A Flight and Franklin in the B Flight.
Top point winners were: Hilliker (23), Franklin (16), Waterman (11) and Sacilowski (10). Season points leaders (through 27 events): 1. Hilliker (735), 2. Tofil (456), 3. Franklin (409), 4. Robert Calph (384), 5. Waterman (357), 6. Sacilowski (349), 7. Phil Hopkins (259), 8. Dave Wallace (244), 9. Nelson (230), 10. Lenny Leszkowicz (226).
This week the league plays Cable Hollow Golf Course in Russell, Pennsylvania, with a 10 a.m. start. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday.
