FREDONIA WINS WILD ONE AT ALDEN
ALDEN — Cece Tonelli scored her third goal of the game with 1:35 remaining as No. 9 Fredonia beat No. 1 Alden 4-3 in a Class B quarterfinal Saturday.
After a 3-2 first half, Bulldogs eighth-grader Ava Schmitt scored her third goal of the game with 4:40 remaining to tie the game.
Fredonia’s Mady Polhamus then hit the crossbar with a shot with 2:11 remaining to nearly give the Hillbillies the lead. Tonelli eventually completed her hat trick in the 79th minute when she took a throw-in from Aria Russo, dribbled to the middle of the field, and scored on a 20-yard shot.
Fredonia will travel to No. 5 Allegany-Limestone for a Tuesday semifinal. The Hillbillies tied the Gators 2-2 in their first matchup this season before winning the second game 2-0.
Tonelli opened the scoring Saturday when she took a pass from Callie Draggett and netted her 32nd goal of the year in the third minute. Less than four minutes later, Tonelli connected with Polhamus, who scored her eighth of the year to make it 2-0.
Schmitt pulled Alden within a goal on a penalty kick in the 14th minute before Tonelli took a high pass from Alanna Marvin in the 24th minute and scored her second of the game to make it 3-1.
Before the half was over, Schmitt took advantage of a misplayed ball by the Fredonia defense and made it 3-2 in the 25th minute.
After halftime, Schmitt’s 28th of the year made it 3-3 before Tonelli’s 34th won it for Fredonia.
Naomi Muck was credited with seven saves for the Hillbillies.
GOLDEN COUGARS ADVANCE
FALCONER — Mary Lundmark and Julianna Roth each had a goal and an assist to lead No. 3 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove to a 3-0 Class B quarterfinal win over No. 6 Akron.
Kylie Kress opened the scoring from Lundmark in the 12th minute for the Golden Cougars.
“It’s definitely the most she’s been on the field since she’s been back,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove head coach Brett Johnson said of Keefe, who missed significant time with an injury. “Having her up there and her speed alone is a big threat for sure.”
Julianna Roth scored an unassisted goal in the 24th minute after a corner kick bounced around inside the 18-yard box in front of the Akron goal.
After halftime, Lundmark capped the scoring with a goal from Roth.
Ellyson Baglia made two saves for the Golden Cougars while Regan Luck made four saves for the Tigers.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove will travel to the Fran Sirianni Athletic Complex for a 7 p.m. semifinal Tuesday against Southwestern. The Trojans won the first matchup between the teams 4-1 before a 0-0 tie in the second game.
“That’s the goal,” Johnson said of playing a lower-scoring game against Southwestern. “Our defense has been playing really well lately. Hopefully we keep them off the board and get a couple. I expect it to be more similar to the second game than the first one.”
TROJANS BLANK SALAMANCA
WEST ELLICOTT — Marlana Cresanti had two goals and two assists while Kenzie Rogers and Avery Johnson each added two goals as No. 2 Southwestern beat No. 10 Salamanca 7-0 in a Class B quarterfinal at the Fran Sirianni Athletic Complex.
