Szach Makes Wednesday Travel League History

MEADVILLE, Pa. — Ron Szach became the first Senior golfer in the history of the Wednesday Travel League to be the outright winner of an event. Szach shot the low round of 80 at Whispering Pines to earn his 11th career tour victory and first since 2012. Szach joins Tony Destro as the only golfers to earn a tour victory as a Senior. Destro’s win came in a tie for the low round.

Ed Tofil finished second with 81 and Ed’s son Ryan Tofil was third with 83. Szach, Ed Tofil, and Robert Calph all led the front nine with 41s, while Szach led the back nine with 39. Dave Franklin was the B Flight winner. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award, in his league debut, was Steve Schrantz.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight- Dave Wallace (No.7), Gary Haase (No.11), Ryan Tofi l(Nos.13,15), Szach(Nos.14,18), and Tim Siragusa (Nos.16,17); B Flight- Don Kujawa (No.2), Tom Sacilowski (Nos.3,4,8), Frank Benamati (No.5), Mike Willoughby (No.9), Bob Kujawa (Nos.11,18), and Franklin (No.12).

Closest to the pin were Franklin (No.2), Ryan Tofil (No.8), and Wallace (Nos.11,17). Winners of the Steeplechase were Pat Weaver in A Flight and Benamati in B Flight.

Top point winners were Ryan Tofil and Wallace (33 apiece), Szach and Franklin (28 apiece), and Sacilowski (23). This week the league plays “Beautiful Overlake” in Girard, PA with a 10 a.m. start. It will be the 750th official Wednesday Travel League event since records began being kept in 2001. Several openings exist at this time. Golfers are asked to inquire by Noon Monday.
