Falconer Impresses In Three-Set D1 Sweep Of Fredonia

FALCONER — Falconer trailed for just six points through the first two sets and coasted to a 25-19, 25-12, 25-18 sweep of Fredonia in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 volleyball Monday.

The Hillbillies (2-2, 1-1) scored the first two points of the night before the Golden Falcons (6-1, 4-0) rattled off the next four to take a 4-2 lead with Mylie Zaranek at the service line. Fredonia tied the set at 5-all, but Falconer scored the next four points — three on Reagan Trask serves — and the set never got closer than two the rest of the way.

In the second set, the Hillbillies again scored the first two points and it was tied 4-4 before the Golden Falcons scored five straight points, including four with Nylah Sharpe at the service line. Fredonia nearly tied the set later when it trailed 12-11, but Falconer regained possession and strung together nine straight points that included three straight aces from Mylie Zaranek, on its way to a 13-point victory.

The Hillbillies didn’t go quietly and actually had their largest lead of the night — 11-5 — in the third set before the Golden Falcons rallied. Fredonia led as late as 15-14, but a service error gave possession back to Falconer and Payton Smith strung together four straight service points, which included kills from Trask and Maddie Widen, en route to a 19-15 lead. The Hillbillies never got closer than three the rest of the way and Sharpe served out match point.

Emily Zaranek led the Golden Falcons with nine kills to go along with seven digs. Mylie Zaranek had a team-high four aces and 17 assists with three kills and five digs. Hannah Melquist had eight kills, a team-high 11 digs, three aces, two blocks and two assists. Trask had three aces and Kaylee Green had a team-high four blocks.

Londyn Wilmot led Fredonia with eight kills, three aces and a block. Elly Saunders had a team-high seven digs and two aces. Alyse Bugaj had a team-high 12 assists while Maddie Krakowiak had two kills and six digs.

PANTHERS SWEEP ELLICOTTVILLE

ELLICOTTVILLE — CC John had 13 kills and four blocks to lead Gowanda past Ellicottville 25-11, 25-15, 25-12 in Division 2 action.

Lilliana Pierce had seven kills and two blocks; Bella Maines had 26 assists, four aces, two kills and four digs; and Addison Kota had five kills and seven digs for the Panthers (4-0, 3-0).

Ande Northrup had eight assists, seven digs and two kills while Riley Whitmer had three kills and four digs for the Eagles (4-3, 1-3).

OLEAN COASTS PAST RED & GREEN

Olean swept Jamestown 25-8, 25-14, 25-14 in Division 1 action.

The Huskies improved to 1-1 overall and in the league.

Aiyanna Stam had five kills, a dig and three blocks; Maylin Cuifolo had seven assists and six digs; and Veronica Short had five digs for the Red & Green (1-2, 1-2).
