The 2025 high school football season was all of 12 minutes old and Tom Langworthy could hardly contain himself.
“Great first quarter,” the Jamestown head coach yelled from the sidelines at Strider Field. “Great job.”
Langworthy’s enthusiasm was then punctuated by a pump of his fist and a huge smile.
It was that kind of night for the Red & Green.
Senior Chase Bonta rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns; freshman Alaric Richards added 79 yards on nine carries and a TD; senior Jericho Thagard recorded another score on the ground; and Jamestown’s defense did the rest to send the Red & Green to a dominant 38-7 nonleague victory Friday over Williamsville North.

“It was special to me, because it’s a long offseason,” Langworthy said. “You’re building up for a game and the first game is important. When you put all the work in and you get the payoff with the feeling of victory, it’s a great life lesson.”
Jamestown essentially put the game out of reach in the first quarter as it found the end zone on its first three possessions — runs of 2 and 9 yards by Bonta and an 11-yard scamper by Thagard. The only points in the second quarter were courtesy of Evan Maloney’s 25-yard field goal, which was set up by sophomore quarterback Jackson Grey’s 41-yard pass to Thagard.
Armed with a 24-0 lead at halftime, the Red & Green were in complete control.
“I really like how we started,” Langworthy said.
After the break, Jamestown scored on its first two possessions of the third quarter, as Bonta and Richards were finding plenty of running room. In fact, the dynamic duo combined for 62 yards on the first drive, capped by Bonta’s bruising 17-yard touchdown run, while on the second drive they combined for 58 yards, highlighted by Alaric’s 7-yard TD burst, the first of his varsity career.
Maloney, a standout on the Red & Green’s soccer team, booted his fourth and fifth successful point-after tries, and the hosts led 38-0 with 2:20 remaining in the third period.
“(Alaric’s) pretty special,” Langworthy said, adding that Bonta’s third TD of the evening was his “best running of the night.”
“He got north-south, lowered his shoulder pads … and bounced off some guys. That was the one where he shook the rust off and I told him that after the game.”
The Spartans, who play in Class A1, ended the shutout on Cal Rogers’ 12-yard touchdown run and Ethan Oware’s point-after kick at the 5:11 mark of the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Jamestown was led by Bonta with 11 total tackles, including one for a loss; senior Luis Diaz with 10 tackles, including three for a loss and a sack; and senior Eligh DeLeon with six tackles, including two for a loss and a sack.
The Red & Green return to action next Saturday when they travel to St. Joe’s Collegiate Institute for another nonleague game.
“Those private schools are tough,” Langworthy said. “It’s a great test for us. That’s why we scheduled it. It’s always better to learn when you win, but you have to make sure that as we’re learning we stay poised and stay consistent. The habits and fundamentals that got us to tonight’s win will get us to future wins.”
NOTES: In his first varsity start, Grey completed 4 of 8 passes for 66 yards; and Thagard (53 yards) and senior Nate Sanchez (13 yards) both had two receptions. “(Grey’s) going to grow so much from this and I think it was good we had the line and running game to support him,” Langworthy said.
