Rich Shoots 78 To Win Wednesday Travel Golf League
GIRARD, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its 750th official event since records began being kept in 2001.
Jeff Rich was the winner at Overlake Golf Course with the low round of 78. Robert Calph finished second, a stroke back with 79. Joe Michalski and Ed Tofil tied for third with 81s. Calph led the front nine with 36 and Tofil led the back nine with 39. Rich now has three career tour wins.
Dave Wallace and Jim Ellman Sr. were the B and C flight winners respectively. The low round by a senior was shot by Dennis Gawronski Sr. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jaime Galarza.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, John Waterman (No. 2), Josh Hilliker (Nos. 6, 12, 17), Calph (No. 8) and Michalski (No. 14); B Flight, Gawronski (No. 1), Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 3) and Phil Hopkins (Nos. 10, 13); C Flight, Mike Willoughby (No. 1), Ellman (Nos. 5, 14, 17) and Pete Pinkoski (Nos.11, 13).
Closest to the pin were Michalski (Nos. 2, 14), Tofil (No. 6) Calph ( No. 8) and Hilliker (No. 12). Winners of the steeplechase were Rich (A Flight), Hopkins (B), and Joe Bifaro (C). In the special deuce pool, deuces on par 3s were recorded by Waterman, Hilliker, Calph and Michalski.
Top point winners were Hilliker and Michalski (62 apiece), Calph (48), Waterman (34), and Ellman (24). Season points leaders (through 23 events): 1. Hilliker (589), 2. Tofil (448), 3. Calph (384), 4. Dave Franklin (383), 5. Waterman (327), 6. Tom Sacilowski (314), 7. Leszkowicz (222), 8. Hopkins (220), 9. Ron Szach (201) and 10. Bob Kujawa (198). Waterman became the second golfer in league history to reach 6,500 career points. Hilliker moved past Dave Criscione and Ken Kaus into 15th place on the all-time points list.
This week the league plays Concord Crest in East Concord. The first tee time is at 9:20. Golfers are asked to be signed up by Sunday at 8 p.m.
