C/S/P’s White Has Big Day, Throws For 5 TDs

SHERMAN – Carson White turned in a fine performance during Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Week 1 victory over Franklinville/Ellicottville.

It turns out the senior quarterback was saving his best for Week 2.

White threw for 224 yards and five touchdowns as the Wolfpack beat Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove 46-30 in both teams’ Class C opener Saturday afternoon at Harry S. Brosius Field.

“I’m very impressed with his growth from Week 1 to Week 2,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Dave Bodamer said. “We just have to keep going on that trajectory.”

White threw touchdown strikes of 8 yards and 47 yards to Gavin Burchanowski, and 17 yards to Mason Groters as Clymer/Sherman/Panama built a 26-6 halftime lead, then added another 6-yard score to Burchanowski and a 5-yard pitch to Kameron Einink as the Wolfpack put the game away over the final 24 minutes.

“This week during practice, I thought he saw things better and was more comfortable,” Bodamer said of White. “That allowed us to do more in the game plan that way.”

Clymer/Sherman/Panama outgained the Herd 398-202, took advantage of a pair of turnovers and scored on a pair of fourth downs to move to 2-0 on the year.

“We went through a big defensive change this week and it probably wasn’t the week to do a bunch of different things,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove head coach Curt Fischer said. “In the second half we went back to some old things. We got burnt up a little bit, but we stopped the run a little bit better in the second half. We just need to find out identity on the defensive side.”

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and the Wolfpack capitalized nine plays later when White and Burchanowski connected on fourth-and-goal from the 8.

“We started out with a turnover and that didn’t help anything at all,” Fischer said.

After a Herd punt, Clymer/Sherman/Panama quickly made it a 12-0 game on Groters’ third-down touchdown reception.

Einink put his stamp on the first quarter with 2:06 remaining when he pressured Herd quarterback Max Parmentier and made a leaping interception that he turned into a 42-yard return for a score and an 18-0 lead.

“I’ve seen Kam do that a few times in practice. Last year at the stadium in the sectional finals, one went through his hands,” Bodamer said. ” … You know it’s in him and he can read that throw pretty well. It was a huge play … he can do that as a player.”

The Wolfpack then quickly answered a Parmentier-to-Grant Zahm 6-yard score with Burchanowski’s 47-yard catch and run for a 26-6 lead with 4:35 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Sawyer Whitney, who ran 35 times for 203 yards last Saturday against the Titans, broke free for a 49-yard touchdown run on Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s first drive of the second half to give the Wolfpack a 32-6 lead. Whitney finished the game with 24 carries for 138 yards.

“We missed a lot of tackles. We had chances to make plays,” Fischer said. “This is what you grow on. We have to fix what we didn’t do well. I only see an upside.”

Following White’s 6-yard scoring pass to Burchanowski on fourth down with 4:12 left in the third quarter to make it 39-6, the Herd nearly got back in the game.

Brody Hawkins returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and then returned the following kickoff along the sideline to give the ball back to Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove. Six plays later, Parmentier threw a 6-yard touchdown to Jaxon Kraft to make it 39-22 after Dylan Newman’s 2-point conversion run.

“Kraft played a heck of a game, Newman came in and did a heck of a job,” Fischer said. “I was super proud of those guys. They are two younger guys to look foward to.”

But Einink caught White’s fifth touchdown of the game on a fourth-and-goal with 6:31 left in the game to give the Wolfpack enough room to survive in the end.

“That was the game right there, those plays. The other side of that is not getting fourth-down stops,” Bodamer said of his team’s conversions. “Last week in the first half, we didn’t convert. … We did a much better job all the way through today.”

The Herd will host Fredonia on Friday night at Bill Race Field while Clymer/Sherman/Panama will travel to Salamanca that same night to take on the defending Class C state-finalists Warriors.

“I think this team can go up there and surprise some people. It’s going to be a dogfight. We didn’t finish well today and we won’t get away with that next week. We will have to maintain control much better than we did today,” Bodamer said. ” … I think the boys we’ll be excited to go up there and play on a Friday night. … It will be a big test.”
