Tofil Leads Travel League With 79 At Green Meadows
NORTH EAST, Pa. — Ed Tofil shot the low round of 79 at Green Meadows Golf Course to win this week’s Wednesday Travel League event.
Tofil edged both Josh Hilliker and Jeff Nelson (80s) by one stroke. Hilliker, Mick Dunning Sr. and Tim Walawender all led the front nine with 39s while Tofil led the back nine with 39. Tofil now has five tour wins this season and became the first golfer in league history to record 100 career rounds with a score below 80.
In the B Flight, Dennis Gawronski Sr. was the winner after a tiebreaker with Pat Weaver. In the C Flight, Aidan Hilliker was the winner after a tiebreaker with Phil Hopkins. Gawronski also shot the low round by a senior. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Don Kujawa.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Tofil (No. 6), Tom Sacilowski (No. 9), Nelson (No. 10) and John Waterman (No. 16); B Flight — Walawender (No. 3), Pete Pinkoski (Nos. 7 and 9), Gawronski (No. 8), Gary Haase (No. 11), Dave Franklin (Nos. 13, 16 and 17) and Kevin Jasinski (No. 16); C Flight — Bob Thompson (No. 3), Hopkins (No. 5), Jeff Marsowicz (Nos. 6 and 15), Aidan Hilliker (Nos. 10 and 14), Joe Bifaro (No. 17) and Bob Kujawa (No. 18).
Closest to the pin were: Walawender (No. 3), Joe Michalski (No. 7), Bob Kujawa (No. 13) and Waterman (No. 16). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Josh Hilliker (A Flight), Jim Ellman Sr. (B) and Hopkins (C).
Top point winners were: Franklin(65), Walawender and Waterman (45 apiece), and Jasinski and Thompson (30 apiece). Season points leaders (through 19 events): 1. Hilliker (490), 2. Tofil (397), 3. This week the league plays The Ridge in Waterford, Pennsylvania, with a 9:30 a.m. start. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10 the league will hold its 11th annual “Commissioner’s Cup” at Chautauqua Golf Club at 10 a.m. The event honors the life and memory of league Commissioner Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday, Sept. 8 at 716-785-2291.
