Tallahassee Clinches National Division No. 1 Seed, Broomall-Newtown Is No. 3; Stamford Clinches No. 2 Seed

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. 6, BROOMALL-NEWTOWN, PA. 1

Tallahassee, Florida continued a dominant string of run prevention, allowing just its second run of pool play in a 6-1 victory over Broomall-Newtown, Pennsylvania in Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series action Wednesday at Diethrick Park.

The Southeast Region champions finished pool play 4-0 to earn the No. 1 seed in the National Division and the corresponding bye into the semifinals.

Broomall-Newtown fell to 2-2 and had to sweat out Game 18 before securing the No. 3 seed in the National Division. The Middle Atlantic Region champions will take on the American Division No. 2 seed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tallahassee scored a run in the first inning and two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before Broomall-Newtown got on the scoreboard Wednesday.

Parker Rudd led off the bottom of the first with a walk, went to second on an error, took third on a flyout by Parker Pennington and scored on Preston Cooksey’s RBI groundout.

In the fourth inning, Cooper Bishop and AJ Henry singled before Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Michael Volpe’s bunt single loaded the bases. Bryce Bedonie drew a bases-loaded walk and Trevor Hanks hit a sacrifice fly as Tallahassee’s lead grew to 3-0.

That was plenty for the trio of Cooksey, Pennington and Volpe, who combined on an eight-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks on the mound.

Broomall-Newtown scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Matthew Schumacher and Cole Patterson singled before Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game James Hogan hit an RBI single.

Tallahassee answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, David Aguilar singled before Nicholas Volpe and Ethan Sapiera drew back-to-back walks. Rudd then hit an RBI infield single and Pennington hit an RBI fielder’s choice that turned into two runs on an error.

Patterson, Quinn and Hogan combined on a six-hitter with four strikeouts and eight walks on the mound for Broomall-Newtown.

Tallahassee will play in the 7 p.m. semifinal Friday.

GAME 18

Ben Henderson, Scotty Dettmer and Jack Patterson combined on a two-hit shutout as Stamford, Connecticut clinched the National Division’s No. 2 seed with a 5-0 victory over Port Angeles, Washington.

The win vaults the New England Region champions into Thursday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal against the American Division’s No. 3 seed. Port Angeles was eliminated with a 1-3 record.

Henderson started for Stamford, allowing two hits and a walk for Port Angeles’ only three baserunners against him. He struck out five. Dettmer got three outs while walking three and Patterson got the final four outs, all via the strikeout.

Stamford took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Dylan Riveles walked to open the frame and stole second before Ryder Palange’s one-out single. After a wild pitch, Dettmer hit an RBI groundout to first base and Palange scored on a wild throw to home plate.

Stamford added a run in the third inning when Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Cody Meek led off with a triple and scored when Leo Ovalles reached on a two-out error.

In the top of the fifth inning, Patterson led off with a double and scored when Meek reached on an error.

Stamford’s final run came in the seventh when Luke Baker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an error.

Jay Lieberman and Coleman Keate combined on a six hitter for Port Angeles. Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Jacob Kimzey and Carson Greenstreet each singled in the loss.
