RUSSELL, Pa. — Steve Sorensen, popular speaker, outdoor columnist and contributor to regional and national magazines, took a first, a second, and a third place in the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Writers Association “Excellence in Craft” awards program at a recent conference in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Sorensen was awarded top honor in “Best Magazine Article” for “The Arthur Young Buck,” published in Muzzle Blasts magazine (November, 2024). His article told the story of a historic trophy buck killed in McKean County, Pennsylvania in 1830.
Sorensen won second place for “Best Outdoor Blog,” a piece called “The Toughest Neighborhood Around,” which appeared on the websites of The Post-Journal and the Times Observer on June 1, 2024. He took third place in “Outdoor Ethics and Sportsmanship” for an article called “No, He Didn’t Need Another Year,” which appeared in The Post-Journal and the Times Observer on Nov. 30, 2024.
“I’m thankful for local newspapers, especially small-town newspapers. They might be the only general interest media that still covers hunting and outdoor topics for their readers. I want my writing to make them glad they do,” Sorensen said.
Sorensen lives in Russell and writes for outdoor magazines, as well as his own blog “Mission: Hunter.” He is a Field Contributor to Deer & Deer Hunting magazine, and his newspaper column, The Everyday Hunter®, appears bi-weekly in The Post-Journal and the Warren Times Observer.
