It can be hard for athletes to get pumped up for a consolation game — especially less than 24 hours after losing out on a spot in a championship game.
Eagle Pass, Texas and Price, Utah had to face that reality early Saturday morning at Diethrick Park.
It appeared the Pacific Southwest Region champions from Price handled the situation better than their counterparts from the Southwest Region.
Price scored seven runs in the first inning and held off a rally from Eagle Pass to capture third place with a 10-8 victory at the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series.
“I felt like they were definitely ready to play,” Price manager Darek Martinez said. “It was a little bit of a letdown after the game (Friday) night, but these guys, when they start warming up and know that it’s time to go play baseball, they go play baseball.”

Jacen Cowley, who was later named the tournament’s batting champion with a .529 average, was named the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for Price after going 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, a stolen base, a run scored and being hit by a pair of pitches.
Price chased the Eagle Pass starting pitcher before he got out of the first inning. Ten players batted; Cowley, Jacen Urbanik and Mason Powell had RBI singles; and Jace Bosone hit a sacrifice fly during the seven-run first inning.
Eagle Pass answered with a three-run bottom of the first as Leandro Mares hit an RBI triple, Julian De Hoyos hit an RBI double and Jesus Calderon also hit an RBI double.
Calderon’s RBI single in the third inning made it 7-4, but Alex Martinez pushed Price’s lead back up to 9-4 with a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Bosone threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts to end the third inning.
“It was huge for him to come in in that spot and get some outs for us. That’s just kind of what it’s been like for us,” Martinez said. “These guys play for each other. Our defense has our pitcher’s back. If they just come in and throw strikes, I think we have a chance.”
Eagle Pass closed to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Mason Villarreal hit a two-run double and Aron Gonzalez added an RBI single.
The Southwest Region champions made it 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Mares.
But Price got its two-run lead back in the top of the seventh inning when Rigdon Rhoten reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI single from Cowley.
“It gave us just a little more confidence and gives Rigdon a little more confidence on the mound knowing he has two to work with,” Martinez said of Cowley’s run-scoring hit.
Rhoten allowed a two-out double to Villarreal in the bottom of the seventh, but induced a groundout to end the game and earn the save.
“We wanted to finish on a high note and they did that,” Martinez said. “It helps with a little bit of that pain.”
