GAME 17

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. 6,

BROOMALL-NEWTOWN, PA. 1

Tallahassee, Florida continued a dominant string of run prevention, allowing just its second run of pool play in a 6-1 victory over Broomall-Newtown, Pennsylvania in Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series action Wednesday at Diethrick Park.

The Southeast Region champions finished pool play 4-0 to earn the No. 1 seed in the National Division and the corresponding bye into the semifinals.

Broomall-Newtown fell to 2-2 and had to sweat out Game 18 before securing the No. 3 seed in the National Division. The Middle Atlantic Region champions will take on the American Division No. 2 seed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tallahassee scored a run in the first inning and two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before Broomall-Newtown got on the scoreboard Wednesday.

Parker Rudd led off the bottom of the first with a walk, went to second on an error, took third on a flyout by Parker Pennington and scored on Preston Cooksey’s RBI groundout.

In the fourth inning, Cooper Bishop and AJ Henry singled before Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Michael Volpe’s bunt single loaded the bases. Bryce Bedonie drew a bases-loaded walk and Trevor Hanks hit a sacrifice fly as Tallahassee’s lead grew to 3-0.

That was plenty for the trio of Cooksey, Pennington and Volpe, who combined on an eight-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks on the mound.

Tallahassee answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, David Aguilar singled before Nicholas Volpe and Ethan Sapiera drew back-to-back walks. Rudd then hit an RBI infield single and Pennington hit an RBI fielder’s choice that turned into two runs on an error.

Patterson, Quinn and Hogan combined on a six-hitter with four strikeouts and eight walks on the mound for Broomall-Newtown.

Tallahassee will play in the 7 p.m. semifinal Friday.

STAMFORD, CONN. 5, PORT ANGELES, WASH. 0

Ben Henderson, Scotty Dettmer and Jack Patterson combined on a two-hit shutout as Stamford, Connecticut clinched the National Division’s No. 2 seed with a 5-0 victory over Port Angeles, Washington.

The win vaults the New England Region champions into Thursday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal against the American Division’s No. 3 seed. Port Angeles was eliminated with a 1-3 record.

Henderson started for Stamford, allowing two hits and a walk for Port Angeles’ only three baserunners against him. He struck out five. Dettmer got three outs while walking three and Patterson got the final four outs, all via the strikeout.

Stamford took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Dylan Riveles walked to open the frame and stole second before Ryder Palange’s one-out single. After a wild pitch, Dettmer hit an RBI groundout to first base and Palange scored on a wild throw to home plate.

In the top of the fifth inning, Patterson led off with a double and scored when Meek reached on an error.

Stamford’s final run came in the seventh when Luke Baker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an error.

Jay Lieberman and Coleman Keate combined on a six hitter for Port Angeles. Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Jacob Kimzey and Carson Greenstreet each singled in the loss.

GAME 19

EAGLE PASS, TEXAS 4, CENTENNIAL, COLORADO 3

Barring an epic collapse on Wednesday, Eagle Pass, Texas had clinched the American Division of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series. Instead, the Southwest Regional Champions were playing to preserve their unbeaten record and Centennial, Colorado made sure that was no easy feat.

However, despite seeing its 3-0 lead disappear into a tie game headed to the seventh, Eagle Pass found a way to prevail.

Down to the final out before extra innings, Mason Villareal reached on an infield single and, with two outs, made it all the way home benefitting from a throwing error off an Eli Moreno grounder to take the game 4-3 and the American Division 4-0.

Moreno put the ball in play that eventually led to the winning run, but it was his efforts stopping them that earned him the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game.

In both the third and fourth innings, Moreno fielded grounders with a runner on third and instead of going for the easy out at first he gunned perfect throws home to prevent two runs in the early. Moreno also hit an RBI double in the bottom of the second that extended a then Eagle Pass lead to 2-0.

Centennial threatened to score in the third and managed one in the fourth, but it was the top of the sixth when the Midwest Plains Champions tied things up, capitalizing on errors.

James Mungia drove in Max Comeaux, who reached on a fielding error, and then pitcher George Sheers helped the cause by driving in Mungia.

After a strong performance on the bump and driving in a tying run, Sheers was named the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for Centennial (2-2).

Eagle Pass earned a day off and the trip to Friday’s semifinals, while Centennial dropped to third in the division and will play Stamford, Connecticut at 7 tonight in the quarterfinals.

A victory from Centennial could set up a rematch on Friday at 4:30 p.m. as Eagle Pass awaits the winner.

GAME 20

PRICE, UTAH 12, JAMESTOWN 7

Already clinching second place in the American Division, Price, Utah came into the final game of pool play with not much to play for, but in the final appearance from host Jamestown, the Pacific Southwest Champions ended up working hard for the 12-7 win.

The first four batters of the game reached base and then scored, allowing Price to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Then, in the following inning, another two runs were added, but that didn’t deter Jamestown, which hit right back with its first two batters reaching and scoring to make it 4-2.

In the second inning, the host team’s Brayden Crawford led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Max Miley began a rally with a single and the next two Jamestown batters reached and scored to tie the game 6-6.

Price was ready for more runs in the top of the third, adding four runs and then another two in the fourth to go up 12-6.

However, this time was different for Jamestown. Instead of punching back, the hosts added just one more run and fell 12-7.

Jamestown (0-4) finishes the tournament at the bottom of the American Division, while Price (3-1) takes second and will prepare for National Division third-place finisher Broomall-Newtown, Pennsylvania today at 4:30 p.m.

The final Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for Jamestown was Logan Simpson, while Jaxton Smith received the award for Price.

Starting at $3.50/week.
