Tarp Skunks Clinch Playoff Spot
Borchardt Has Big Night As Jamestown Beats Geneva 16-1 In 7 Innings
GENEVA — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks had transportation issues and arrived to McDonough Park later than usual for their Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game against the Geneva Red Wings on Tuesday evening.
Once they took the field, the Tarp Skunks wasted no time putting the Red Wings away.
Nathan Borchardt reached base in four of his five plate appearances, including a two-run triple, as Jamestown beat Geneva 16-1 in seven innings of West Division action.
With the win, the Tarp Skunks clinched a spot in the PGCBL postseason.
The Tarp Skunks led 3-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after two innings before an eight-run third inning put the game out of reach.
In addition to Borchardt’s three RBIs, four other Jamestown players had two RBIs: Nolan Smith was 2 for 3 with a double; Justin Bremner was 2 for 4 with a double; Ben Slanker hit a sacrifice fly and walked with the bases loaded; and Blake Herman was hit by a pitch to force in a run and hit a sacrifice fly. Dom Costello also had two hits and scored twice.
Easton Barnett, Cole Schwochow, Brenden Kline, Matthew Frye and Jameson Walsh pieced together a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks on the mound for the Tarp Skunks. Walsh, a Southwestern Central School graduate, got the final three outs with two strikeouts and a flyout while pitching out of a one-out bases-loaded jam. He walked two and allowed a double in his first appearance since June 20 at Batavia.
In Jamestown’s first inning, Bremner and Borchardt had RBI singles before Herman’s RBI hit by pitch.
In the second, Smith had an RBI double and Slanker hit his sacrifice fly.
In the Tarp Skunks’ fourth, Smith, Slanker, Joaquin Rodriguez-Costa and Aiden Nolasco drew bases-loaded walks, Borchardt hit his two-run triple, Herman had a sacrifice fly, and Bremner hit into an RBI fielder’s choice.
Jamestown’s 14th run scored on a wild pitch before Eddie Dolansky was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Harley Hoag hit into an RBI fielder’s choice to cap the scoring.
Coupled with first-place Batavia’s 5-3 loss at Auburn, second-place Jamestown (26-13) moved within a game of the Muckdogs for the top spot and the West Division’s No. 1 seed heading into next week’s playoffs. The Tarp Skunks host fifth-place Elmira at 6:30 p.m. today at Diethrick Park.
