A head basketball coach and a player from the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association will participate at the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Girls Summer Hoops Festival next weekend.
Chris Dole, the current Westfield girls coach, and Panama senior-to-be Kiera Loberg are the locals on the Buffalo/Western New York roster.
In its 13th year, the tournament replaces the former Empire State Games, bringing together the best boys and girls basketball players in the state. Hosted by Monroe-Woodbury High School, just south of West Point, the event runs from Aug. 1-3.
Assisting Dole will be associate coach Grace Licata of Amherst and assistant coaches Steve Mason of Maryvale and Nick Coronado of Frontier.
Loberg’s teammates include Mikayla Biles of Cardinal O’Hara; Isabella Ceccarelli, Ava Gunnells and Bellarose Milligan of West Seneca West; Julia Lyman of Lancaster; Daniella Oakley of Springville; Emerson Sullivan of Frontier and Michaela Wiskup of Holland.
The Summer Hoops Festival has plenty of history. WNBA superstar Breanna Stewart is a notable alumnus who was part of the first-ever BCANY championship team.
Buffalo/WNY will open the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 1 against Southern Tier and then take on Central at 8:30 p.m., both at Monroe-Woodbury’s main gymnasium. On Aug. 2, Buffalo/WNY will square off against Rochester at 10:30 a.m. and then take on Mid-Hudson at 3 p.m. to complete pool play.
Action resumes on Aug. 3 with the third-, fourth- and fifth-place games, the semifinals and championship.
Local sponsors include Collaborative Children’s Solutions and Fusion Basketball.
