Batavia Ends Skunks’ Season

BATAVIA — Jamestown’s finest season in the franchise’s short history came to an end Wednesday night in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division final.

Eric Woodley pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the save to support a strong outing by winning pitcher Luc Rising (4-1) that was coupled with some outstanding outfield defense as No. 1 Batavia held off the second-seeded Tarp Skunks 4-2 before 1,209 fans at Dwyer Stadium.

The win advances the Muckdogs into the best-of-three championship series. Game 1 is Friday against the East Division title holders.

The Tarp Skunks had several chances to plate more runs, but they stranded 12 runners and saw their postseason come to an end.

Colin Bolla (2-2), one of four Tarp Skunks’ pitchers, took the loss. In 3 2/3 innings, he gave up two runs, five hits and struck out three.

Jamestown opened the scoring in the top of the third. Eric Weeks reached on an error and, after a two-out walk to Nolan Smith, Jakob Haines singled to right.

Batavia responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of RBI singles by Brayden Horton and Tyler Castrataro, and then Rising was supported by a great catch by center-fielder Travis Hammond that denied Brady Marshall an extra-base hit and a likely RBI.

The Muckdogs tacked on an unearned run in the sixth off Jamestown reliever Nick Ianniello. After leadoff hitter Omar Carreras was hit with a pitch, Cooper Fesh laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Haynes, the Tarp Skunks’ catcher, threw wildly to first and the ball went out of play to put runners at second and third. Jacob Veczko followed with a sacrifice fly to push Batavia’s lead to 3-1.

Will Taylor came on in relief of Ianiello and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Jamestown pulled to within a run in the eighth on Ben Slanker’s RBI single, but with runners at the corners Woodley struck out Nathan Borchardt for the third out.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Muckdogs tacked on an insurance run when Fesh singled to center to score Carreras, who had reached on a one-out double.

In the top of the ninth, Veczko made two highlight-reel catches in right field to deny Blake Herman and Brady Marshall of base hits. Weeks followed with a two-out double and Dom Costello singled after an 11-pitch at-bat, but Woodley got Brady McGuire to ground out to end the game for his second save and Batavia’s first West Division title since 2022.
