CHURCHVILLE — After the first round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys golf championships at Mill Creek Golf Club on Sunday the field would need to play their best golf and hope for a bad day from Jamesville/Dewitt’s Jackson Saroney.
That bad day did not come as Saroney went 7-under to shoot 65 on Monday and a 132 total claiming the state championship. With just one bogey on each day he also helped Section III claim the team championship.
Maple Grove’s Evan Steffen missed out on the top 15 after posting the same score on both days with 75s to make 150 for 17th place. He ended the day on No. 1 and 2 with a pair of bogeys to drop back five spots.
Fredonia eighth-grader Jordan Kelly had an impressive debut at the state championships with a two-day total of 153 to take 26th place. He struggled on the front 9 in the second round, but posted just one bogey and eight pars on the back 9.
Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly was outdone by his younger brother, but still managed to crack the top 50 with a two-day score of 157 taking 46th place.
