Sandhills, Joliet Lead After Round 1

CHAUTAUQUA — The first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s and Women’s Golf National Championships is in the books at Chautauqua Golf Club.
On the men’s side, the Sandhills Community College Flyers picked up where they left off last year with a 2-under to take a 14-shot lead after 18 holes.
On the women’s side, Joliet Junior College sits on the top of the leaderboard with a plus-104 to hold a 61-stroke advantage.
There are currently three golfers under par for the guys with the Flyers’ Wyatt Beaver leading the way with a 68 to be 4-under par. He leads his teammate Vegas Melen by one stroke entering the second round.
Dan Towell was Jamestown CC’s top player with a 91 on the day to sit in 60th for the tournament.
For the women, Ivy Burnett of College of DuPage paces the group with a 7-over 79. The returning All-American has a 7-stroke advantage on Sydni Sundstrom of Community College of Morris.
The women will have honors as Round 2 gets underway at 9 a.m. today at Chautauqua Golf Club.
