HAMBURG — The Southwestern baseball team had not won a sectional title since 1982 and on Saturday the Trojans had an opportunity to end that drought.

However, in the way was the current standard in Class B baseball, No. 1 Medina. The Mustangs have won four of the past five sectional titles and even claimed the 2022 state championship.

Living up to the billing, the Mustangs showed the scrappy Trojans squad why they remain the standard, playing nearly perfect baseball with pitcher Brody Fry facing the minimum number of batters in a 4-0 no-hitter to claim the Section VI Class B championship at Frontier High School.

“I just told the guys that they have nothing to be ashamed of,” Southwestern head coach Jared Brown said. “Nobody expected us to make it this far, they believed in each other, I believed in them the entire time. They left everything they had on the field. I feel like our seniors set the foundation for what’s to come for the future of this younger team.”

Fry was lights-out as he methodically worked through the Southwestern lineup with 13 strikeouts and only losing the perfect game in the top of the seventh as Judd Harris smacked a hard grounder to shortstop that turned into a throwing error.

“He did a phenomenal job mixing speeds,” Brown said about Fry. “We talked about it the last few days having an approach at the plate and taking that offspeed pitch to right field and we just couldn’t get it done today.”

Medina scored the only run it needed in the first inning when a Vinny Gray walk turned into two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly by Aiden Papaj.

Medina’s No. 9 hitter Tyler Kroening then hit a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the second and Papaj scored the final run in the fourth after reaching on an error.

“You’re going to have days like that against Medina,” Brown said. “They’ve been a quality team for quite some time now. Give them all the credit, they shut us down at the plate. But that takes nothing away from Wilson (Genareo) on the mound, he played tremendous.”

With the continuous rain, Southwestern freshman pitcher Wilson Genareo could have easily crumbled, but instead he got better as the game went on.

Genareo did not give up another run after the third and only gave up four hits, two walks and struck out seven on the day.

“I thought Wilson did a tremendous job on the mound today,” Brown said. “He’s going to be here for another three years. I’m sure the section and the surrounding teams are taking note of what we have in our youth.”

The seasoned Fry made it difficult for Southwestern to back up a gem in its own right and claimed a second straight title for Medina.

With just five seniors and a strong stock of underclassmen, an unlikely finalist No. 6 Southwestern got a taste of championship baseball and is eager to get back.

“They play in an extremely tough league, similar to ours,” Brown said about Medina and the future of his group. “These guys know what they have to do to get better in the offseason to get us back here and get that blue patch.”

As Southwestern (10-7) reloads for next year, Medina will advance to a Class B subregional against the Section V champion Wednesday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.

Starting at $3.50/week.
