Local Athletes Seek Trips To States This Weekend In Falconer

FALCONER — Over a hundred local athletes will attempt to punch their ticket to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association track and field championships when Falconer hosts the Section VI state qualifier today and Saturday at Bill Race Field.

New York state is turning the clock back nearly a quarter-century this year, crowning champions in Class A, Class B and Class C for the first time since 2002. Since then, the state has gone with a Division I and Division II format for large and small schools, respectively.

CLASS A

Jamestown will send eight individual girls to today’s qualifier with senior Emily Cardinale carrying the Red & Green’s top seed. She is seeded second in the pole vault at 11 feet. Cardinale is also seeded third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.31).

Senior Belle Johnson (800 meters), senior Myah Crossley (100-meter dash), sophomore London Hamilton (1,500 meters), senior Nolah Hamilton (1,500 meters), eighth-grader Julia Stormont (3,000 meters), eighth-grader Lucy Hockenberry (100-meter hurdles, pole vault) and junior Ryah Leeper (pentathlon), as well as the Red & Green’s girls 3,200-meter relay will also compete this weekend.

On the boys side, Jamestown has a trio of top seeds individually as well as a No. 1 seed in the 400-meter relay.

Senior Jarren Cotter is the No. 1 seed in the 200-meter dash (22.29), senior Brighton Lumia is the top seed in the 110-meter hurdles (15.51) and junior Jorge Rivera Jr. is the No. 1 seed in the discus (140-0).

No. 2 seeds for the Red & Green include Brighton Lumia in the 400-meter hurdles (56.33) and Rivera in the high jump (6-0), while senior Ayden Samuelson is seeded third in the 100-meter dash (11.29) and freshman Beckett Lumia is seeded third in the 400-meter dash (50.63).

Other boys competing for Jamestown include: sophomore Angel Martinez (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash), sophomore Cameron Burgess (200-meter dash), junior Finn Caswell (800 meters), senior Andrew Marucci (800 meters), junior Wyatt Olmstead (1,600 meters), junior Clevon Wofford (1,600 meters), freshman Thomas Kathman (1,600 meters), Beckett Lumia (110-meter hurdles), sophomore Braiden Kennedy (110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles), junior Zyiere Ferguson (400-meter hurdles), junior Lucas Arnone (3,000-meter steeplechase), sophomore Andre Graham (shot put), sophomore Troy Keefe (shot put), junior Cameron LaTone (discus), junior Chase Maggio (discus) and freshman Tyler Tellez (pole vault). The Red & Green’s 400-meter relay is seeded first (43.17), 1,600-meter relay is seeded second (3:23.85) and 3,200-meter relay is seeded fifth (8:44.04).

CLASS B

Dunkirk is the lone local team competing in the Class B qualifier.

The top seed for the Marauders girls is No. 2 junior Hanan Mohamad Narvaez in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (7:50.50).

Other competitors for the girls include: sophomore Khloe Munson (100-meter dash), eighth-grader Chianti Lopez (200-meter dash), eighth-grader Jocelyn Thomas (400-meter dash) and junior Jazmin Bultron (pole vault). Dunkirk also has the No. 8 seed in both the 400-meter relay (52.84) and 1,600-meter relay (4:26.68).

Marauders senior Johnee Thomas is the No. 1 seed in the boys 400-meter dash (50.19).

Other competitors for the boys include: sophomore Brady Dobek (400-meter hurdles), junior Yeriel Gutierrez (long jump), senior Jaylen McMichael (triple jump), senior Riley Smith Mallon (shot put, discus), senior Jared Sek (discus) and senior Jareese Gaines (high jump). Dunkirk is also seeded No. 8 in the 400-meter relay (45.10).

CLASS C

Most of the local competitors can be found in Class C.

Southwestern sophomore Emma Lewis is the top seed in the 800 meters (2:18.01) and 2,000-meter steeplechase (6:58.42), as well as the No. 3 seed in the 3,000 meters (10:10.19).

Frewsburg senior Grace Lennon is the No. 1 seed in the 100-meter dash (12.51) and No. 2 seed in the 200-meter dash (26.26).

Southwestern sophomore Marlana Cresanti is the No. 1 seed in the 200-meter dash (26.17) and 400-meter dash (58.03).

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton senior Jada Cole is the No. 2 seed in the triple jump (36-3.5) and high jump (5-5).

Southwestern junior M’Kenzie Zavala is the top seed in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.25) and Clymer/Sherman/Panama eighth-grader Finley Mitchell is seeded third (1:09.15).

Southwestern senior Mikayla Johnson is the No. 1 seed in the shot put (41-7) and second seed in the discus (126-7).

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Mary Lundmark is the top seed in the pole vault (10-9) and Frewsburg senior Elayna Pitts is seeded third (9-0).

Clymer/Sherman/Panama senior Isa Kioko is the No. 3 seed in the high jump (5-4).

Salamanca freshman Jamila Nelthrope is the No. 3 seed in the 100-meter dash (12.82) and No. 4 seed in the 200-meter dash (26.61).

Fredonia senior Delaney Kaiser is seeded No. 2 in the 400-meter dash (59.73) and Silver Creek/Forestville junior Chymerah Genovese is seeded No. 3 (1:00.36).

Southwestern junior Tryniti Card is seeded No. 2 in the 800 meters (2:19.43) and Clymer/Sherman/Panama senior Milka Woodring is seeded second in the pentathlon (2,370).

Maple Grove sophomore Sydney Simmons is seeded second in the 100-meter hurdles and Zavala is seeded third.

Silver Creek/Forestville freshman Leah Mays is seeded No. 3 in the 1,500 meters (5:02.39).

Fredonia freshman Alessandra Bugaj is seeded third in the triple jump (35-3).

Franklinville/Ellicottville senior Elizabeth Price is the No. 3 seed in the shot put (33-11) and discus (121-0).

In the girls 1,600-meter relay, Southwestern is seeded first (4:01.97), followed by No. 3 Fredonia, No. 4 Clymer/Sherman/Panama, No. 6 Silver Creek/Forestville and No. 9 Maple Grove.

Southwestern is also No. 1 in the girls 3,200-meter relay (9:33.05), followed by No. 3 Clymer/Sherman/Panama, No. 7 Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton, No. 9 Salamanca and No. 12 Frewsburg.

Nine individuals have earned No. 1 seeds for the boys in Class C.

Southwestern junior Ryan Ohl is the top seed in the 400-meter dash (50.11), Maple Grove junior Ethan Verbosky is in the 800 meters (1:56.28), Cattaraugus-Little Valley junior Bransen Gabel in the 400-meter hurdles (57.84), Frewsburg senior Cody Kent in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:18.53), Silver Creek/Forestville junior Nate Mays in the pentathlon (3,079), Southwestern senior Connor Young in the long jump (22-1.5), Southwestern senior Leo Kavic in the shot put (50-9), Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton sophomore Walter Lukasiak in the discus (152-10) and Randolph senior Caden Inkley in the pole vault (15-3).

Maple Grove is the No. 2 seed in the boys 3,200-meter relay, followed by No. 5 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley, No. 8 Clymer/Sherman/Panama, No. 9 Salamanca and No. 10 Frewsburg.

Action gets underway at noon today and 10 a.m. Saturday. The state championships are set for Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 at Middletown High School.
