Jayhawks Continue To Improve At National Tournament
CHAUTAUQUA — The Jamestown Community College Jayhawks continue to climb the leaderboard of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s Golf Championships with all three players moving up at least a spot through 54 holes at Chautauqua Golf Club.
The best of the bunch remains Dan Towell, who shot his best round of 85 on a day that saw a 45-minute delay due to lightning. His plus-50 for the event has him in 64th.
Jamestown native Cole Johnson’s once again made the greatest improvement by carding an 86, his best day by 5 strokes. The round moved him up five spots in the standings to 68th, leapfrogging five competitors in the process.
The leader of the individual male competition remains Vegas Melen of Sandhills Community College, whose minus-7 has him 4 strokes ahead of his fellow Flyer Wyatt Beaver. Those two are part of a group of Flyers that have Sandhills in first, 39 strokes ahead of Georgia Military College.
On the women’s side, reigning All-American Ivy Burnett, of College of DuPage, stretched her advantage to 18 strokes ahead of Sydni Sundstrom of Community College of Morris. Joliet Junior College has a massive 255-shot lead for the women’s team title over Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester.
The 104-golfer field will be right back at it for the final round today, with tee times beginning at 9 a.m.
