Gowanda’s Blake Herman Named All-WNY Small School Player Of The Year

Gowanda senior Blake Herman, left, was named the All-Western New York Small School Player of the Year.

The Dunkirk baseball team won its first sectional title in over a decade and several players have earned recognition for that accomplishment. Selected by the coaches, Dunkirk senior pitcher Greg Orcutt and junior infielder Josh Lemanski were named to the All-Western New York Large School First Team.

Orcutt was on the mound for the Marauders when they claimed the Section VI Class A2 championship, throwing all seven innings against Lewiston-Porter with 11 strikeouts and giving up just five hits and six walks in the 2-1 decision.

Lemanski was a top hitter for Dunkirk, batting .373 with four doubles, two triples, a home run, 19 RBIs and scoring 25 runs this season. Dunkirk’s Gabe Valentine, Paul Trippy and Anthony Cosme also earned honorable mention.

The Gowanda baseball team also captured a sectional title, then went all the way to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C championships. Leading the Panthers was Canisius University commit Blake Herman. Both his efforts on the mound and at the plate earned him the honor as All-Western New York Small Schools Player of the Year.

Herman hit .544 with five home runs, seven triples, eight doubles, 32 RBIs and scored 49 times, while going 11-2 on the mound with an ERA of 0.80 and WHIP of 0.754.

Frewsburg’s Chase Haglund was a first-team All-WNY selection.

Guiding his team to the state semifinals, Gowanda’s Tim Smith was named the Small Schools Coach of the Year.

Several locals made the First Team with Fredonia senior Ashton Putney at pitcher, St. Mary’s senior Branston Lindquist at catcher, Frewsburg senior Chase Haglund in the infield and Brocton junior Anthony Gatto as an outfielder.

Putney pitched six complete games for the Hillbillies with three shutouts and earned five wins on the mound; Jamestown native Lindquist hit .328 for the Lancers with 15 RBIs, six doubles and a triple, and Haglund hit .422 with six doubles, four triples, 15 RBIs and scored 44 runs.

Fredonia added brothers Matt Cowan as an infielder and Andrew Cowan as the designated hitter to Second Team, while Salamanca’s Payton Bradley is a Second Team catcher and Jacob Herrick took an outfield spot. Gowanda’s Carter Capozzi earned an infield selection and Westfield senior Danny Bratton was named at pitcher.

The All-WNY Large School Player of the Year was Amherst senior Grady Brown, Canisius junior Joshua Kandefer earned Pitcher of the Year and Coach of the Year went to Robert Augustino of Niagara Falls.
