All Three Jayhawks Improve On Day 2
CHAUTAUQUA — After a difficult day at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s and Women’s Golf National Championship on Tuesday, host Jamestown Community College’s three golfers improved across the board on Wednesday in the second round.
Playing the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club, the Jayhawks’ Dan Towell continues to pace the trio, sitting at plus-37 after a one-stroke improvement on Day 2 That’s good enough for 65th overall. Teammate Zach Johnson improved by seven strokes to card a plus-25, a seven-shot difference from round one. The South African sits in 73rd place. The biggest leap was made by Jamestown native Cole Johnson, who shot a plus-19, which is 20 strokes better than his opening round to move him up to 74th.
The leader of the individual men’s competition is now Vegas Melen of Sandhills (North Carolina) CC, who sits at minus-4 at 140. He is two strokes ahead of teammate Wyatt Beaver for the best in the field. Those two are part of a group of Flyers that have Sandhills in first place, 18 strokes ahead of Georgia Military College.
On the women’s side, the College of DuPage’s Ivy Burnett, who finished third in 2024, extended her lead by shooting a plus-8. She is now 14 strokes ahead of Sydni Sundstrom of CC of Morris. Joliet Junior College has a massive 153-shot lead for the women’s team title over Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester.
