FORESTVILLE — Evan Steffen performed Monday at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 sectional golf qualifier like he usually does at this time of year.
In fact, his coach, Justin Hanft, described him in a Facebook post as … “incredible.”
Hard to argue.
The Maple Grove senior captain and defending Section VI champion fired a 1-under 71 for the best round of the day at Tri-County Country Club. Although he was already exempt from qualifying by virtue of his sectional title last year, Steffen was hitting on all cylinders yesterday anyway.
After shooting a 2-over 38 on the front nine, he followed that up with a blistering 3-under 33 on the back nine that included an eagle, three birdies, three pars and two bogeys to finish one shot ahead of medalist Ryan Kelly of Fredonia. Steffen will have the opportunity to defend his sectional crown next Monday at Diamond Hawk Country Club in Buffalo.
He’ll have company from his CCAA peers.
The other 10 qualifiers and one alternate, and their scores, are: Ryan Kelly of Fredonia, 72; Evan Maloney of Jamestown, 78; Jordan Kelly of Fredonia, 78; Tyler Salvaggio of Jamestown 80; Carson Swanson of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield, 82; Chase Hartnett of Southwestern, 83; Hunter Johnson of Jamestown, 84; Baylor Hirliman of Maple Grove, 85; Brody Frame of Olean, 88; Cam Bartman of Olean, 88; and alternate Channing Brainard of Falconer, 88.
The remaining scores are Cannon LeGrano of Fredonia, 89; Nico Fadale of Fredonia, 90; Jackson Marsh of Cassadaga Valley, 90; Gavin Johnson of Jamestown, 91; Kaison Malkowski of Fredonia, 91; Drew Oste of Maple Grove, 92; Adrian Bohdanowycz of Olean, 94; Braiden Truby of Fredonia, 95; Chase Kolstee of Jamestown, 98; Ejuah Sarvaiyah of Southwestern, 98; Cole Johnson of Clymer/Sherman/Panama 101; Lincoln Thomas of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield, 104; Seth Vaughn of Southwestern, 105; Liam Swan of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield, 114; and Landon Thomas of Dunkirk, 114.
