Spangler Alive For State Berth

Fredonia Junior Is Chautauqua County’s Final Hope At Sectional Tournament

ORCHARD PARK — Eight Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association boys tennis players entered the Section VI singles and doubles tournament Wednesday at Orchard Park High School.

After two rounds of action, Fredonia junior Jackson Spangler and Olean senior Janis Osswald still have a chance at reaching states with semifinal matches looming today.

Spangler began singles competition with a dominant win over Etienne Bohlen of City Honors 6-0, 6-0 and then he won his quarterfinal bout against Richie LaPaglia of Clarence 6-2, 6-1.

On the other side of the bracket, Osswald was nearly flawless, defeating Daniel Goodwin of Barker 6-0, 6-0 and then Wyatt Truax of Clarence 6-0, 6-1.

The two could meet in the finals, but first Spangler will take on Williamsville North’s Dakshaeswar Muthukrishnan and Osswald plays Amherst junior Aiden Belle-Isle.

The top three from singles competition will earn a trip to the state tournament. Among the remaining semifinalists, Muthukrishnan is the lone player to reach the state tournament last season.

Falling short of the semifinals in singles competition was Falconer’s Joshua Erickson, who lost in the opening round to Samir Fares of Olmsted 6-0, 6-3, and Maple Grove’s Jack Sherry, who lost to Belle-Isle in the opening round 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles competition, the CCAA teams did not fare as well, not making it beyond the quarterfinals.

The Southwestern team of Nolan Lefler and Chase Haaksma lost in the opening round to Orchard Park’s Callum Debroka and Noah Deangelis 6-0, 6-3. An Olean pair of Brayden Cook and Brady Riehle fell to Shaan Cheruvu and Knox Venator of Williamsville East 6-2, 6-1.

Another pair of Olean teams won their opening matches, but suffered heartbreak in the quarterfinals.

The duo of Cavan Boutillette and Alexander Ash-West first swept Barker’s tandem of Nick Heidemann and Ryan Fisk 6-0, 6-0, but then lost a thriller to Cheruvu and Venator 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, making it two Huskies teams that Williamsville East defeated for a spot in today’s semifinals.

Then, the Olean team of Brenden Bailey and Evan Snyder narrowly defeated Lewiston-Porter’s James Townsend and Carmelo Raimondi 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1. However, the Clarence team of Alexander Laspro and Marshall Harrishburg made quick work of them in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-1.

Just like the singles competition, three doubles teams will advance to the state tournament. The semifinal matchups today are Williamsville East’s Cheruvu and Venator against Clarence’s Laspro and Harrishburg, then Orchard Park’s Taylor Mcgrath and Griffin Watson versus Williamsville East’s Yonten Gyatso and David Cong.

Starting at $3.50/week.
