Four-Run 5th Sends Fredonia Past Salamanca
SALAMANCA — Trailing 3-2, Fredonia put together a four-run fifth inning and beat Salamanca 8-3 through a driving rain in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Hillbillies (5-4, 3-1) played as the home team in Salamanca just two days after winning the first game of their series with the Warriors (8-4, 2-4).
Matt Cowan earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, allowing three runs (one earned), while striking out four. AJ Kinney earned the save with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Salamanca took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cory Holleran, who had singled, scored on a two-out error.
In Fredonia’s second, three walks turned into a run when Matt Cowan hit an RBI groundout.
The Warriors regained a 2-1 lead in the third. Holleran walked and appeared to be picked off first base, but an error on the play allowed him to score all the way from first.
In Fredonia’s fourth, Brady Crawford singled and Kinney walked before everybody was safe on Brady Helmer’s sacrifice bunt. Cowan then hit into a double play and the tying run scored.
Salamanca took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on two walks and a hit batter before Connor Seeley hit into an RBI fielder’s choice.
In the Hillbillies’ fifth, two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases before Helmer tied the game with a fielder’s choice. Cowan then gave Fredonia the lead for good with a two-run single and Ashton Putney followed with an RBI double.
The Hillbillies’ final runs came on three walks and a Helmer two-run single in the sixth.
Cowan finished with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored; Helmer had a single and three RBIs; and Putney hit an RBI double.
Holleran had a single and two runs scored, Brendon Ghani singled, and Zach Trietley struck out one and pitched into the fifth inning for Salamanca.
VALENTINE PROVIDES BIG BLOW
OLEAN — Gabe Valentine hit a two-run double during a five-run fourth inning to help Dunkirk beat Olean 8-6 in Division 1 play.
Valentine finished with three RBIs and a run scored while Josh Lemanski had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Anthony Piede walked four times and scored three runs for the Marauders (9-1, 5-1), who benefited from 14 walks at the plate.
Greg Orcutt struck out eight in four innings on the mound.
Austin Miles doubled and drove in three runs while G Smucinski scored twice for the Huskies (4-5, 2-3).
GOWANDA SWEEPS PAIR
GOWANDA — Gowanda swept a Division 3 baseball doubleheader from Cattaraugus-Little Valley.
In Game 1, Blake Herman went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run and three runs scored; Kyan Austin was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Carter Capozzi was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored; Brayden Smith went 3 for 3 with a double, five RBIs and three runs scored; Drew Kota was 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and five runs scored; and Jayden Fish was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and five runs scored for Gowanda (10-2, 8-0).
Austin and Fish combined on a three-hitter with six strikeouts on the mound.
Derek Pritchard doubled while Noah Ulinger and Brecklan Dundas singled for the Timberwolves (0-10, 0-7).
In Game 2, Logan Ruff went 3 for 5 with five RBIs and four runs scored; Landen Ashley was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored; Colin Barnes was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and five runs scored; and Herman tripled and scored three runs.
Seth Geiger tossed two innings of two-hit ball, striking out four and walking three. Noah Lauer pitched an inning and struck out one.
DJ Szata and Ulinger had hits for Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

ELLICOTTVILLE WINS LATE
NORTH COLLINS — Ellicottville broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning to beat North Collins 4-3 in Division 3 on Saturday.
Rylan Benjamin threw a complete-game seven-hitter with seven strikeouts in the win.
Ryan Norton went 2 for 4 with a run scored and Parker John had the only other hit for Ellicottville (3-6, 1-5).
Walter Ebersole was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Zach Quiter was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Vince Montaldi was 2 for 3 with a run scored for North Collins (5-4, 4-3).
Quiter struck out nine and walked eight while allowing two hits in six innings on the mound for North Collins. Lucas Demmerley threw the final inning, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one.
