Brocton Adds Intrigue To Final Week Of CCAA D2 Baseball
CLYMER — Senior Anthony Cruz made his first varsity appearance on the mound Tuesday for Brocton.
And he was dominant.
Cruz tossed three innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits while striking out six as the Bulldogs beat Clymer/Sherman/Panama 5-3 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 baseball.
With the win, Brocton improved to 9-3 overall and, more importantly, 7-1 in the division with a pair of games against first-place Frewsburg later this week. Tuesday was the second of six consecutive days of games for the Bulldogs.
The Wolfpack (7-3, 7-2) led 3-2 entering the top of the sixth inning before Ray Santiago hit a one-out double to center field. Two batters later, Owen Pryll hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game.
In the top of the seventh, Drew Gustafson walked and Anthony Gatto reached on an infield single before Michael Garcia hit a go-ahead RBI single to right field. Nathan Laurito then hit an RBI groundout to make it 5-3.
The two-run lead was enough for Cruz, who worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh. Tate Catanese walked to open the inning and Andrew Spiesman reached on a single before a strikeout, a popout and another strikeout ended the game.
Gatto started for Brocton and struck out six while allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned) in four innings. Jeremy Weisner doubled for one of the Bulldogs’ seven hits.

In their first game at the Martin Road Athletic Complex all season, the Red & Green (5-10, 2-8) came out hot. In Jamestown’s half of the third inning, Chase Bonta was hit by a pitch and later scored on a passed ball.
West Seneca West (3-13, 1-11) scored four runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by Jude Khoury’s bases-clearing three-run triple. Khoury later scored on a groundout.
The Red & Green scored their final two runs in the fourth inning. Rizzuto walked and stole second before going to third on a passed ball. Kubera hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. Smith then walked, Bonta singled and Karson Milne was hit by a pitch before Gavin Maggio hit an RBI infield single.
