Seven-Run Uprising Sends Dunkirk Past Jamestown

DUNKIRK — A seven-run fifth inning led Dunkirk to an 11-1 nonleague baseball victory over Jamestown on Wednesday.

Paul Trippy hit a two-run single, Greg Orcutt, Anthony Cosme and Thomas Shaffer drew bases-loaded walks, Anthony Piede was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Henry Leone hit an RBI single for the Marauders (13-2, 8-1 CCAA D1) during their decisive inning.

Shaffer earned the win for Dunkirk, tossing three innings of two-hit ball, striking out two and walking one.

Leone went 3 for 3 while Trippy and Cosme each drove in a pair of runs.

Carter Rizzuto went 2 for 3 for the Red & Green (5-11, 2-8 ECIC D1).

Blake Smith Jr. tossed four innings of two-hit ball, striking out five and walking four for Jamestown.

WALK-OFF WALK FOR FREDONIA

FREDONIA — AJ Kinney worked a full-count walk with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to force in Colin Luce with the winning run as Fredonia beat Olean 5-4 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 action.

The walk-off victory made a winner out of Matt Cowan, who threw a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

The Huskies (5-7, 3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Austin Miles reached on an error, Landon Johnson walked and Chase Vogtli reached on an infield single. Miles then scored on a passed ball, but the Hillbillies (7-7, 5-3) got out of the inning without further damage thanks to a double play when right fielder Pauly Tabone caught the ball and doubled up a runner at second base.

Fredonia answered in the third inning when Ashton Putney singled with two outs, Andrew Cowan singled Putney to third and Colin Luce hit an RBI single to center field.

In Olean’s fifth inning, Miles and Johnson walked before moving up on a wild pitch. Vogtli then lined into a double play when Brady Crawford made a diving catch, but Miles later scored on a wild pitch.

The Hillbillies tied the game again in the fifth. Andrew Cowan walked with two outs, Colin Luce moved him to third with a single and Cowan later scored on a passed ball.

Fredonia finally took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Colin Crowell singled and Luce Gullo walked to chase Olean starter Noah Cortmill from the game. Reliever Dominick Myers struck out the next two batters, but a walk to Matt Cowan loaded the bases before Putney hit a two-run single up the middle.

Olean tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Joseph Mest walked and Miles singled. With two outs, Vogtli hit a two-run double to right-center field. Fredonia got out of the inning tied when Brady Helmer chased down a long Caine DeGolier drive to center field.

That set up the dramatic walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh.

Putney finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored; Luce had two hits and an RBI; and Crowell had two hits and a run scored. Fredonia turned three double plays in the game.

FALCONER SURPRISES GOWANDA

GOWANDA — Colton Rhinehart hit a two-run single to cap a four-run sixth inning as Falconer rallied past first-place Gowanda for a 4-3 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 baseball victory.

Chase Bianco walked to open the sixth inning and Erik Stenstrom followed with a single to center field before L Johnson hit an RBI double for the Golden Falcons (8-4, 7-4). Gavin Curtis followed with an RBI single to make it 3-2.

After a strikeout for the first out, Rhinehart hit his two-run single to left field to make it 4-3.

Stenstrom tossed a complete game and scattered nine hits on the mound for Falconer. He struck out five and walked three while allowing three runs (two earned).

Madden Lay singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Panthers (13-3, 11-1), but pinch-runner Owen Pfaffenbach was stranded at first. In the seventh, Kyan Austin walked with two outs and went to second on Carter Capozzi’s single, but a caught stealing ended the game.

Gowanda took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Blake Herman’s one-out single and Austin’s RBI single.

The Panthers made it 3-0 in the fifth as Brayden Smith singled with one out, stole second and third, and scored when Herman reached on a dropped third strike. Herman later scored on Capozzi’s RBI groundout.

Stenstrom finished 3 for 4 and Curtis was 2 for 3 for Falconer.

Herman and Austin each had two hits while Jayden Fish doubled for Gowanda.

ECKMAN HAS BIG DAY

MAYVILLE — Mason Eckman went 4 for 5 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead Frewsburg past Chautauqua Lake 11-1 in Division 2 action.

Chase Haglund went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored while Gavin Weaver was 2 for 4 with two runs scored for the Bears (11-2, 10-0).

Maddox Sheesley and Weaver combined on a two-hitter with three strikeouts and four walks on the mound for Frewsburg.

Clayton Smith and Devin Hewes each singled for the Eagles (5-9, 4-7). Cayden Blackman and Smith combined for four strikeouts on the mound.

WILSON GENAREO SHINES ON MOUND

SALAMANCA — Wilson Genareo threw a five-inning two-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks to lead Southwestern past Salamanca 10-0 in Division 1 action at Veterans Memorial Park.

Cooper Charles went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored; Wilson Genareo was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored; Lucas Genareo was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored; Gavin Anderson was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored; and Brody Ellis doubled for the Trojans (6-5, 6-4).

Cory Holleran and Zach Trietley each singled for the Warriors (9-6, 2-6). Holleran and Jacob Herrick combined for five strikeouts on the mound.

BRATTON POWERS WESTFIELD

SHERMAN — Danny Bratton threw a five-inning one-hitter and also went 4 for 4 with two home runs and a double at the plate as Westfield shut out Clymer/Sherman/Panama 11-0 in Division 2.

Mason Baum had two hits, including a home run; Logan Baum had two hits; and Tristen Phillips also had two hits for the Wolverines (6-6, 6-5).

Bryce Hinsdale had the lone hit for the Wolfpack (7-4, 7-3).

RED DRAGONS COAST PAST COUGARS

SINCLAIRVILLE — Camden Lombardo and Gavin Darr collected three hits apiece to aid the pitching of Kyle Yohe and send Maple Grove to a 14-6 Division 2 victory over Cassadaga Valley.

Jake Reinhardt added a double and Yohe fanned eight for the Red Dragons, who improved to 4-7 overall and 4-6 in the division.

Bradley Windnagle and Logan Hayward collected two hits apiece and Grant Zahm added a double for Cassadaga Valley (1-8, 1-7).
