JCC Women Swim Into 1st; Boys Are 2nd At Nationals
BUFFALO — The Jamestown Community College women’s swim team had an impressive showing on Day 2 of the NJCAA swimming and diving nationals as they moved to first in the non-scholarship division and third overall; the JCC men kept hold of second in the non-scholarship and seventh overall.
“It was a 180-degree flip from yesterday. I am proud of how the kids came out today and stepped up. I expected a much better performance, and we definitely got it,” said head coach Todd Conklin.
For the ladies, things started off fast with a fourth place finish in the 200 free relay for the team of Anna Jones, Emily Swan, Desiree Putt, and Addison Lawson, who shaved almost two seconds off their previous best time. Putt stayed hot as she claimed seventh in the 50 back with a time of 29.88. Then both Anna Jones and Haleigha Hardy took to the waters in the 400 individual medley. Jones found herself back on the podium with a seventh-place swim, while Hardy earned 12th. Up next was the 100 butterfly; Jayln Linton claimed 14th overall. Another pair of Jayhawks dove into the 200 freestyle. Emily Swan clocked a 2:06:16, good enough for sixth overall. Lawson made the finals with her 16th place showing. Last in the pool was the 400 medley relay, where the team of Putt, Hardy, Jones, and Swan once again earned a fourth for the Jayhawks. Lastly was the diving well, where Ashlynn Swan returned to the podium with her third-place performance. The sophomore was just 10 points out of earning second.
“The women are being led by Emily Swan, Desiree Putt, and Addison Lawson. Some really great performance from them today. A pair of tremendous swims from Anna (Jones) and a nice showing by Haleigha (Hardy). Then both relays having All-Americans set the pace for the next two days,” added Conklin.
Switching to the men, the 200 free relay squad of Cameron Milewski, Zach Johnson, Christian Merrill, and Kyle Dean placed seventh with a new JCC record swim of 1:30:11. Milewski and Dean were right back in the pool for the 50 back. Milewski earned a 10th, and Dean set another Jayhawk and Region 3 record with a 23:32 while finishing fifth. Finally, the men took home seventh in the 400 medley relay. The group of Milewski, Merrill, Johnson, and Dean clocked a 4:30:96, shaving over five seconds off of their previous best, setting another JCC top mark.
“The men keep breaking records and swimming with a lot of heart and desire. They knew it would be a fight this weekend, and they are really bringing it. It is nice to see them growing each swim,” said Conklin.
Overall, JCC saw 22 All-American swims on Tuesday.
“Overall, if the energy stays high, I think the momentum will continue to move in the right direction, with another big day tomorrow. We are looking to gain more ground on the competition,” smiled Conklin.
The Jayhawks look to keep the strong showing going for Day 3 of nationals starting on Friday morning at 9:30.
