Southwestern Overwhelms Medina In Class B2 Final
Southwestern won its second straight Section VI Class B2 championship and fourth overall with a 7-1 defeat of Medina on Friday evening at West Seneca East High School.
“It was one of our top goals. It was our second goal of the season,” Southwestern head coach Jason Deering said. “We knew we really could do this one.”
Seth Vaughn got the scoring going early for the top-seeded Trojans, with a goal assisted by Ryan Ohl in the sixth minute.
“Based on game film, we thought if we could get up early on them and take the upper hand, we thought we could control the rest of the game,” Deering said. “Once that floodgate opens, it usually comes pouring on.”
Ohl made it 2-0 in the 20th minute. Ohl played a short corner kick to Connor Young, who gave it back to Ohl for a better-angle look at the net.
Ohl’s shot deflected in front of the net and got by the Mustangs’ goalkeeper.
“With the wind tonight, that was the main reason to go with short kicks and try to keep it on the ground,” Deering said. “Whenever we can get it to Connor on a one-on-one attacking with a whole bunch of other players, it’s a good thing for us.”
In the 24th minute, Young scored from Nolan Lefler to make it 3-0, which stood as the halftime score.
After the break, Southwestern put the game away early with a pair of goals.
Young blasted a free kick off the post and the rebound was put home by Vaughn to make it 4-0 in the 45th minute.
“It’s Batman and Robin with us,” Deering said of Young and Vaughn, who have combined for67 goals. “I love it when they both eat.”
In the 48th minute, Young found an open Vaughn, who made a long run from nearly 35 yards away before completing the hat trick for his 26th goal of the season.
“We’ve been playing really, really good soccer the last couple of games,” Deering said.
Grey Kidder tacked on his eighth goal of the season in the 57th minute and Young made it 7-0 in the 58th minute from Vaughn.
“The more people we can have score, the better. Seth is tearing it up right now, Grey is putting in goals,” Deering said. “Connor can’t do everything for us. We definitely need another finisher to put it in the back of the net.”
No. 2 Medina broke up the clean sheet late as Trojans keeper Cooper Charles finished with four saves.
Southwestern will take on Class B1 champion East Aurora in the Class B crossover game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at West Seneca West High School. The second-seeded Blue Devils beat No. 1 Lafayette 1-0 in Friday night’s championship game. East Aurora is the defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association champion.
“We haven’t won the crossover,” Deering said. “That’s our next goal to win that one and get to a state run.”
