Class C South Drama
Only Salamanca, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Are Safe Entering Tonight’s Action
The Section VI Class C playoff puzzle is still very much unsolved.
A pair of tonight’s games will be a long way toward deciding who plays where, and if three of the teams involved even make the playoffs.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton moved up to No. 12 in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class C rankings and will host No. 14 Portville/Cuba-Rushford tonight in Mayville. If the Eagles win tonight, they will be the Class C South No. 2 seed.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove and Southwestern are both listed as honorable mention in Class C. The Herd and Trojans play each other tonight at Bill Race Field in Falconer.
If Portville/Cuba-Rushford beats Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton, the Panthers will be the No. 2 seed and the Eagles will be the No. 3 seed, leaving the winner of the Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove-Southwestern game to be the Class C South No. 4 seed.
If Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton beats the Panthers and Southwestern beat the Herd by 15 or more points, Portville/Cuba-Rushford would be out of the playoffs.
If Portville/Cuba-Rushford loses and Southwestern loses or wins by less than 15 points, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove would be the No. 3 seed and Portville/Cuba-Rushford would be the No. 4 seed with the Trojans out of the playoffs.
Salamanca stayed No. 2 in Class C and has already clinched the Class C South No. 1 seed. The Warriors will host Eden/North Collins tonight before a Class C quarterfinal against Class C North’s No. 4 seed next weekend.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama, which kept the No. 2 spot in the Class D rankings, beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Thursday night, and now will have a bye week before its semifinal.
Also in Class D, No. 15 Randolph and honorable-mention Gowanda/Pine Valley play tonight at Raymond Van Wie Field in Randolph, while honorable-mention Franklinville/Ellicottville hosts nonleague Royalton-Hartland/Barker.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama is already locked into the No. 1 seed, Wilson is No. 5 and Cattaraugus-Little Valley is No. 6.
If Randolph beats Gowanda/Pine Valley, the Cardinals would be the No. 2 seed, Franklinville/Ellicottville would be the No. 3 seed and the Panthers would be the No. 4 seed.
If Gowanda/Pine Valley beats Randolph by 15 points or more, the Panthers would be the No. 2 seed, the Cardinals would be the No. 3 seed and the Titans would be the No. 4 seed.
If Gowanda/Pine Valley beats Franklinville/Ellicottville by 14 points or less, Randolph would be the No. 2 seed, Franklinville/Ellicottville would be the No. 3 seed and Gowanda/Pine Valley would be the No. 4 seed.
In Class AA, honorable-mention Jamestown hosts honorable-mention Niagara Falls at Strider Field tonight. The winner of that game will be the No. 4 seed and the loser will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming playoffs. The two will play each other in the quarterfinals with the No. 4 seed hosting that game.
In other Class AA action tonight, No. 6 Bennett hosts honorable-mention Orchard Park and No. 24 Lancaster visits nonleague Depew, a Class B honorable mention.
Canisius is No. 7 and St. Francis is No. 20 in Class AA, while Iona Prep of New York City’s Catholic High Schools League is No. 1.

In Class A, Clarence is No. 9, Sweet Home is No. 16 and Kenmore West is No. 28, while McKinley, Starpoint, West Seneca West and Williamsville North are all honorable mention. Section VIII Garden City and Section I Somers are tied for No. 1.
