RANDOLPH — Cooper Freeman had four goals and two assists as Randolph easily won its boys soccer opener 8-0 over nonleague Chautauqua Lake on Tuesday at Weeden Park.

The Eagles (0-1-0) hung around for the opening 30 minutes of the first half, trailing just 1-0 on Freeman’s goal from Malachi Brown in the 10th minute, but the Cardinals (1-0-0) scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the half to lead 4-0 at the break.

In the 34th minute, a poor touch by Chautauqua Lake gave possession back to Randolph as senior Drew Hind passed the ball off to Freeman. The junior did the rest, dribbling toward the middle of the field away from light pressure from the Eagles before shooting back across the grain to beat Chautauqua Lake senior keeper Brendan Klossner, whose diving effort was not enough.

Not even two minutes later, the Cardinals struck again, this time with Freeman assisting on Hind’s first goal of the season. Freeman drew all of the Eagles’ attention along the goal line, including that of Klossner, before neatly tapping a ball to Hind alone in the 6-yard box to make it 3-0.

With 36 seconds left in the first half, sophomore Isaac Pihlblad passed to junior Cody Slade, who blasted a shot just inside the near post to make it 4-0.

After halftime, sophomore Aydan Eccles opened the scoring with a goal from Hind in the 44th minute.

Freeman completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute. He dribbled in alone on Klossner from near midfield without a Chautauqua Lake defender stopping him before tapping a shot home easily.

In the 57th minute, junior Dallas Finch crossed a ball into a crowd inside the 6-yard box that was punched home by Slade.

Freeman capped the scoring with his fourth of the day in the 59th minute off a pass from Pihlblad.

All that was left was to see if the Cardinals could maintain their clean sheet.

Although junior Delsin Tallchief was rarely tested, he did his part in the shutout in the 65th minute. Chautauqua Lake senior Nate Henry sent a strong free kick toward the near post that was stopped by the diving efforts of Tallchief. Another Eagles player had a look at a yawning net on the rebound, but again Tallchief made the save before a third attempt glanced off the goalpost and out of play.

Randolph, which lost to Maple Grove in last season’s Section VI Class C semifinals, returns to action Saturday at home against Westfield/Brocton, which also lost in last year’s semifinals to Wilson.

Chautauqua Lake, which didn’t make it out of the Class C quarterfinals a year ago, is right back in action today when it hosts Cassadaga Valley/Falconer, a Class B1 semifinalist last year, in Mayville.

Starting at $2.99/week.
