BATAVIA — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks got on the scoreboard first with a pair in the second inning during Monday’s West Division semifinal against top-seeded Batavia, but that would be all the runs they scored and the Muckdogs chipped away with four runs in separate innings to win 4-2 advancing to the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division Finals.

Zachary Kourous got things started for the Tarp Skunks in the top of the second with a leadoff double, then moved 90 feet away from home as he stole third when Aidan Wallace walked. Kourous was driven in by a Leo Doyle RBI single which was followed up by a Noah Brooks walk that loaded the bases.

Batavia found itself in trouble and things looked to get worse when Wallace reached home on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0, but a strikeout and consecutive pop outs got the Muckdogs out of the jam.

Jamestown’s lead did not last long as Batavia responded with a run in the bottom half of the second and then by the end of the third the game was tied again.

In the bottom of the second, Jamestown also fell victim to a wild pitch as Anthony Greco reached scoring position due to one and TJ Morris capitalized with a RBI single. Then in the bottom of the third, Travis Hammond was walked and made his way around the bases to knot the game at 2-2.

Hammond scored again in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual game-winner, while James Mason provided an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for the Muckdogs.

Jamestown finished with more hits, but was unable to capitalize on them with Kourous leading the way going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Henry Juan went 2 for 4, and both Doyle and Bobby Stang collected one hit.

Hayden Givens-Craig got the nod for the Tarp Skunks on the bump and gave up three earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three in six innings.

Garrett Beaver picked up the win for Batavia after throwing five innings with two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Batavia advances to the West Division final against Elmira after the Pioneers defeated Auburn 15-8.
