A pair of starting pitchers threw complete games.

One offense scored 20 runs and pounded out 35 hits.

A defense committed one error over 13 innings.

A lot of things went right for one team in Sunday’s Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader at Diethrick Park.

Unfortunately for the home-standing Jamestown Tarp Skunks, that team was the visiting Elmira Pioneers.

Garrett Rochon scattered 11 hits and was only scored upon in one inning during Elmira’s 6-3 victory in Game 1 before his teammate, Connor Freeman, shut out Jamestown over the final four innings of a 14-2 win in Game 2.

The Tarp Skunks, who scratched their way back to the .500 mark and into a tie for third place with the Pioneers after a five-run ninth inning in an 8-6 win in Elmira on Saturday night, dropped to 12-14 on the season after Sunday afternoon’s twinbill sweep.

“I think we were definitely there the whole game. They got some big hits when it counted and we didn’t. That’s just how the game goes sometimes,” Jamestown interim manager Ryan Hill said of the Game 1 loss. “In the second game, they got us in the middle of a long stretch. That’s just how it goes with the pitching sometimes.”

Pioneers leadoff hitter Matthew Leahy went 5 for 5 to lead a 21-hit attack as Elmira scored in five of six innings during their Game 2 rout.

Eli Shedd (Wagner College) took the loss for Jamestown, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out two to see his earned run average rise to 8.80 in five appearances this summer.

“They were finding holes, they were finding luck today,” Hill said. “That’s baseball; sometimes you find the holes and sometimes you don’t.”

The Tarp Skunks then turned to a trio of position players to finish out the afternoon as Eli Harpalani (Catawba Valley Community College), Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) and DJ Stoianovich (SUNY Brockport) combined to get the final nine outs. They walked four and gave up nine hits while striking out just one.

“We’re confident in our arms. It was just the middle of a long stretch. It was tough planning,” Hill said. “We want to make sure everybody is good for the next few days. It’s just one of those things where you have to save guys and plan for the future.”

Austin Matranga (Grand Canyon University) doubled and scored on Stang’s RBI single in the first inning, while Noah Brooks (Siena College) singled and scored on Connor Kiefer’s (Alfred State College) RBI single in the second inning for Jamestown’s only runs in Game 2.

In a more competitive Game 1, Jamestown’s Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) was done in by one poor inning on the mound as Elmira scored four runs in the fifth to rally for a three-run win.

The Tarp Skunks took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Henry Juan (Williams College), who went 3 for 3 in the game, doubled to open the frame and Harpalani walked with two outs.

“It was definitely tough to keep him out of the lineup,” Hill said of Juan, who didn’t play in Game 2 after catching all seven innings of Game 1. “We wanted to make sure after catching a long day in the sun that he’s 100% moving forward. You don’t want to burn guys out.”

Brandon McClain-Banks (Youngstown State University) then hit a two-run triple to left-center field to give Jamestown the lead as Pioneers center fielder Aidan Stern crashed into the wall, but failed to make the catch. Leo Doyle (Wagner College) followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.

Givens-Craig picked up a strikeout to open the top of the fifth, but he hit No. 9 batter Manuel Castro and Brody Bartenstein followed with a single. Leahy made it a one-run game with an RBI single and Andy Schroeder gave Elmira a 4-3 lead with a two-run single. After a fielder’s choice, Darryn Callahan made it 5-3 with another RBI single.

“I think he battled really well today. This was his first start, so you never know what to really expect,” Hill said of Givens-Craig. “He gave us better than we could’ve really asked for.”

Youngsville High School graduate Nathan Lucks (Alfred State College) made his first appearance of the summer for Jamestown in the sixth inning, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam. In the seventh, a leadoff single turned into the Pioneers’ sixth run of the game before Lucks left with two men on base. His final line was 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball while allowing five hits and striking out one.

Jamestown failed to score over its final four trips to the plate, stranding four runners on base.

The Tarp Skunks are in action tonight at Batavia before returning home to face Niagara Falls on Tuesday at Diethrick Park. Will Saxenmeyer (Wagner College) will take on the Muckdogs tonight at Dwyer Stadium.

“We’re really confident in what we have. … We know it’s a long season ahead,” Hill said. “We’re looking forward to really finding our groove in the next couple of weeks.”

ELMIRA — The Elmira Pioneers entered the ninth inning with a 6-3 lead, but the Jamestown Tarp Skunks scored five times in their last at-bat to win 8-6 at Dunn Field on Saturday night.
