Gowanda’s Kota Named POY, Shares Top Pitcher Award In D1 East

Youth was served in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East softball this spring as the league’s top two awards were given to underclassmen.

Gowanda sophomore Addison Kota was named the league’s Player of the Year and shared the league’s Pitcher of the Year award with Silver Creek freshman Rylee Weiskerger.

Kota hit a blistering .778 with six doubles, four triples and six home runs while driving in 37 runs and scoring 30 for the Panthers, who shared the league title with Weiskerger’s Black Knights. In the circle, Kota went 8-2, allowing 30 runs (14 earned) in 57 innings while striking out 76 and walking 25. She gave up just 33 hits, pitching to a 1.72 earned run average with a pair of shutouts and a no-hitter.

Weiskerger went 8-4, allowing 28 runs (five earned) in 83 2/3 innings while striking out 148 and walking 24. She gave up just 42 hits, pitching to a 0.42 earned run average. At the plate, Weiskerger hit .491 with eight doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 20 runs and scoring 25.

Kota was joined on the First Team by three teammates: senior catcher Ella Luther, junior shortstop/third baseman Holland Browning and senior right fielder Emily Pound.

Luther hit .596 with five doubles and a triple while driving in 19 runs and scoring 18. Browning hit .500 with four doubles and five triples while driving in 14 runs and scoring 24. Pound hit .513 with four doubles and two triples while driving in nine runs and scoring 18.

Weiskerger was joined on the First Team by two teammates: junior shortstop/catcher Makayla Kelly and freshman pitcher/third baseman Maddie Blair. Kelly hit .320 with three doubles while driving in 10 runs and scoring 15. Blair hit .296 with three doubles while driving in 10 runs and scoring six.

Randolph had two players on the First Team: junior third baseman/shortstop Sadie Steward and senior pitcher/third baseman Abigail Pitts. Steward hit .522 with six doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 15 and 16 runs. Pitts hit .308 with five doubles while driving in 13 runs and scoring nine.

Forestville also had two players on the First Team: junior pitcher Megan Gruber and sophomore shortstop Carilene Sliwa. Gruber appeared in 17 games, pitching to a 2.11 earned run average. She struck out 163 in 109 2/3 innings. Sliwa hit .462 with seven doubles and a triple while driving in eight runs and scoring 16.

Brocton’s two players on the First Team were junior pitcher Madison Sears and eighth-grader catcher Paige Miller. Sears struck out 85 in 65 2/3 innings and threw a no-hit shutout. Miller hit .391 with six doubles and two triples while driving in 11 runs and scoring 14.

Pine Valley’s two players on the First Team were junior pitcher/shortstop Danica Farnham and senior first baseman Alyssa West. Farnham hit .308 with eight doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in 13 runs and scoring nine. She also struck out 98 in 81 innings in the circle. West hit .214 with three doubles and a triple while driving in five runs and scoring 13.

Pine Valley’s Tara Hayes was named the Coach of the Year and Pine Valley also received the Team Sportsmanship Award. Individual Sportsmanship Award winners included: Pine Valley senior Jessina Miller, Silver Creek junior Cassidy Westbrook, Gowanda’s Browning, Randolph senior Kayden O’Neill, Brocton senior Hannah Utegg and Forestville junior Jade Work.
