Clarence Too Much For Jamestown In Section VI Division 1 Flag Football Title Game

ORCHARD PARK – Members of the Red & Green flag football team stood near midfield and shared high-fives with Buffalo Bills Dion Dawkins and Damar Hamlin after the clock struck 0:00 Monday evening.

While is was likely the memory of a lifetime for the Jamestown High School girls, they all wish it had come after a win.

Unfortunately, it was not to be.

The Clarence duo of quarterback Ella Corry and running back Sammi Jo Payne were just too much.

Corry threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns and ran for one in the second half, while Payne added 77 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the top-seeded Red Devils defended their Section VI Division 1 title with a 33-6 victory over No. 3 Jamestown at Highmark Stadium.

“They’re tough. They have athletes everywhere on the field. It’s tough to cover everybody. They have some great experience,” Jamestown head coach Steve Propheter said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be a cake walk coming in here. We were going to have to play tough and they outgunned us.”

Corry connected on touchdowns of 14 yards to Breanna Hurley and 1 yard to Lia Meichenbaum in the first half to give Clarence a 12-0 lead.

The advantage would’ve been more going into halftime, but the Red & Green’s Ella Propheter stopped the Red Devils’ Emma Payne at the 3-yard line after a hook-and-ladder as time expired in the first half.

“We were down 13 points Friday night and came back. The girls weren’t hanging their heads about it. We’d been there before,” said Coach Propheter, Ella’s father.

Coach Propheter added: ” … No. 4 (Sammi Jo Payne) was just really fast and had some really good moves.”

Jamestown’s offense came up empty in the opening 25 minutes. Its best chance to score came on a long pass that was dropped for a would-be touchdown on third-and-18 from the 38-yard line just after the two-minute warning.

“You don’t have chances to make mistakes against Clarence,” Coach Propheter said. “We definitely had to make sure we executed an almost perfect game. It just wasn’t our night.”

The Red & Green went three-and-out to open the second half and Clarence made it a three-score game when Corry scored on a 1-yard run just after Hurley ran free for 54 yards off a reverse.

Jamestown finally got on the scoreboard with a nine-play drive that covered 60 yards on its second possession of the second half. Propheter connected with Kaylee Leeper for a 21-yard completion on an early third down before Kate Kathman caught an 8-yard touchdown from Propheter to make it 19-6 with 14:48 remaining.

“We knew we weren’t going to throw a 60-yard touchdown pass. We knew we were going to have to kind of chip away at it,” Coach Propheter said. “It’s a lot different than fall football, having to go 20 yards. Chipping away at it is getting 7 or 8 yards every play. That’s what we wanted to do all night, we just couldn’t get there.”

After a Leeper interception, the Red & Green had an opportunity to make it a one-score game. A 6-yard run on third-and-10 set up a fourth down from their own 36-yard line. After a hard snap count failed to draw the Red Devils offside, Jamestown called timeout and elected to punt, but a dropped snap gave the ball back to Clarence at the 31-yard line.

“We were planning on punting if we didn’t get the hard count. We thought maybe we could stop them and get a little bit shorter of a field,” Coach Propheter said. ” … It’s getting a little iffy on your half of the field to go for it. … It just didn’t work out with the fumbled snap.”

Three plays later, Sammi Jo Payne ran for her 21-yard touchdown and Jamestown never threatened again.

While the Red & Green didn’t win the sectional title, they did make the championship game just one season removed from being part of a six-team flag football pilot program in Chautauqua County.

“We just have to get some girls dedicated to it,” Coach Propheter said. “I think this is definitely going to help because they did have to choose between other sports.”
