5 Locals Heading To State Tourneys
Steffen, Kozlowski To Compete In Elmira; Wintersteen, Spacciapolli, Hoffman In Rexford
Five area student-athletes will attempt to reach the pinnacle of high school golf in New York this weekend.
Maple Grove’s Evan Steffen and Dunkirk’s Robert Kozlowski will compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys golf championships, while Fredonia’s Juli Spacciapolli and Sydnee Hoffman will be joined by Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s Jocelyn Wintersteen at the girls championships.
Steffen and Kozlowski will take part in a practice round Saturday before the tournament tees off at 9 a.m. Sunday for the boys championships at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira. After 18 holes Sunday, the field will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Monday for the final 18 holes.
At the boys Section VI state qualifier May 13 at Bartlett Country Club in Olean, Steffen shot a 27-hole medalist score of 113, while Kozlowski finished with a 118 to tie for fifth.
The girls will also take part in a practice round Saturday before their tournament tees off at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Edison Club in Rexford. The final 18 holes will tee off at 9 a.m. Monday.
At the girls Section VI state qualifier May 20 at Gowanda Country Club in Collins, Wintersteen fired an 84, Spacciapolli shot a 90 and Hoffman recorded a 96.
Steffen and Kozlowski will be joined on the Section VI boys team by Orchard Park’s Garrett Senfield, Enzo Clerici and Landon Arnold, Clarence’s David Brooks and Ben Northman, Williamsville East’s Tyler Delisanti and Iroquois’ Adam Cichowski. The top seven overall scores from each section will be used to determine the team champion.
Dante Bertoni of Section IV’s Union-Endicott won the 2023 boys championship with a birdie in a one-hole playoff with Brody Burgess of Section V’s Victor. Both shot two-day totals of 2-over 146. Last year’s team champion was Section V, which finished 52 over par.
Section VI finished tied for eighth in 2023 at plus-129. Delisanti shot 78-81-159, Clerici finished 81-83-164, Cichowski shot 85-82-167 and Brooks shot 81-88-169 last year. Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly (89-87-176) and Southwestern’s Griffin Bogdanowicz (86-86-172) represented the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association at last year’s boys championships.
Spacciapolli, Hoffman and Wintersteen will be joined on the Section VI girls team by Orchard Park’s Claire Brady, Clarence’s Kylie Dean, Jullana Enser and Tatiana Tutko, Niagara Wheatfield’s Brianna Scozzafava and Amherst’s Autumn Bailey.
Kennedy Swedick of Section II’s Albany Academy for Girls shot 5-under 139 to easily win last year’s girls championships by 7 strokes over Emma Lee of Section I’s Scarsdale. Last year’s team champion was Section I, which finished 82 over par.
Section VI finished seventh at plus-244. Wintersteen finished 91-92-183 and Spacciapolli went 94-94-188 at last year’s championships. Dean shot 86-82-168 and Tutko went 94-94-186 last year. Jamestown’s Nilla Ecklof also represented the CCAA in 2023 with a 109-108-217.
