FALCONER OUTLASTS RANDOLPH

FALCONER — After finishing Tuesday’s game in the circle for Falconer, the Golden Falcons turned to Hannah Melquist again Wednesday and her teammates had her back in an 11-6 nonleague victory over Randolph.

Melquist received her run support early with three of Falconer’s first four batters scoring to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The outburst was highlighted by a Mylie Zaranek RBI that scored Emily Rhinehart followed by a two-run home run by Emily Zaranek that scored Angelina Fiasco.

Falconer (2-0) tacked on another three runs in the second with Khloe Livengood, Jerzie Smith and Rhinehart scoring with an RBI coming off the bat of Fiasco on a single.

On its second run through the lineup, Randolph started to make a mark on the board and it began with a Sadie Steward single. She was knocked in by Abbey Pitts. Donnilynn Sheldon collected an RBI with the Cardinals’ third single of the inning and she later scored to cut the Falconer lead in half in the fourth inning.

The Golden Falcons provided much needed insurance in the bottom of the sixth as they batted through the lineup starting with a double from Katrina Schrantz, Livengood and Smith then reached base on a hit by pitch and walk. Rhinehart then hit an RBI single and Fiasco reached on a dropped third strike before making it around the bases for the first five batters of the inning to score.

Falconer’s lead reached 11-3, but Randolph (0-1) managed three more runs in the top of the seventh when Steward hit a two-run homer that scored Aliza Hind. Pitts followed up the home run with a double, but Melquist stopped the runs there for an 11-6 victory.

Melquist finished the game with five strikeouts, four walks and 10 hits. Ryanne Bushey started in the circle for the Cardinals, who finished with nine strikeouts and nine walks.
