Southwestern Boys, Girls Coast Past Marauders

M’kenzie Zavala, Emma Lewis, Alexis Grijalva and Katie Bishop were all double-winners for the Southwestern girls (2-0, 1-0) track and field team as the Trojans defeated Dunkirk 125-15 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division action at the Fran Sirianni Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

Zavala won the 100-meter hurdles at 17.8 and the 400-meter hurdles at 1:15.2, Lewis took first in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters at 4:54.0 and 11:00, respectively, Grijalva claimed the 200 meters and 400 meters at 27.4 and 1:02.7, respectively, and Bishop won the long jump and triple jump with distances of 14-feet, 9-inches and 32-feet, 1-inch, respectively.

Dunkirk’s lone victory came in the pole vault with Felicity Cooper reaching a height of 7 feet, 6 inches.

WEST ELLICOTT — Neves Hoose was a double-winner as Southwestern took down Dunkirk 99-42.

Hoose won the long jump and the high jump for the Trojans (2-0, 1-0), reaching 18 feet, 8 inches and surpassing 5 feet, 8 inches, respectively.

Dunkirk (0-1, 0-1) was led by double-winner Nathan Carlson sprinting to first in the 100 meters and 200 meters with times of 10.9 and 23.2.

RUSSO LEADS FREDONIA TO WIN

FREDONIA — Mariella Russo claimed three events to lead Fredonia’s girls past Olean 81-55 on Tuesday.

Russo won the 100-meter hurdles at 18.2, the 400-meter hurdles at 1:04.4 and the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 10 inches. Fredonia eighth-grader Izzie Czekanski was a double-winner taking the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters, and junior Delaney Kaiser won both the 400 meters and long jump.

KEEFE SHINES IN HURDLES DEBUT

FREDONIA — Dominick Hirliman, Lucas Peterson-Volz and Isaiah Smith were double-winners for Olean as the boys beat Fredonia 104-37.

Fredonia was highlighted by Nathan Keefe competing in the hurdles for the first time and coming away with first-place finishes in both the 110-meter high hurdles and 400-meter hurdles with times of 12.1 and 1:04.9, respectively.

BEMUS POINT — Leah Mays was a triple-winner for Silver Creek/Forestville, but that was not enough to get by Maple Grove in a 72-65 girls loss.

Sydney Simmons and Kenzie Wadsworth were double-winners for Maple Grove. Simmons won the 100-meter hurdles at 18.2 and the high jump reaching 4 feet, 2 inches, while Wadsworth claimed the 100 meters at 13.9 and the long jump at 13 feet, 6.75 inches.

Mays won the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters with times of 2:44.2, 5:26.7 and 11:47.3, respectively.

LUMIA LEADS THE WAY FOR JHS

LANCASTER — Jamestown opened up its return to the Erie County Interscholastic Conference with an 89-52 win over Lancaster.

Brighton Lumia led the Red & Green as a triple-winner in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and the triple jump; Avery Thagard was a double-winner in the high jump and pole vault; Jarren Cotter was a double-winner in the 100 and 200 meters; and Noah Burch took the 400 meters and the long jump.

Carson Zuba of Lancaster was a double-winner in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

In an amazing pre-meet gesture, the Legends bought dinner for Jamestown’s drive home. “The competition was fierce, and so was the sportsmanship,” said Jamestown coach Steve Sipior.
