Donisi-Led Dunkirk Rolls Past Jamestown

DUNKIRK — Cassidy Donisi tossed a three-hitter, struck out nine and issued one walk to spark Dunkirk to an 11-2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Division 1 West softball victory over Jamestown on Tuesday.

Donisi was also the beneficiary of a five-run first inning.

Leading the way offensively for the Marauders (1-2, 1-1) were Brooke Szymczak (double) with three hits, and Donisi, Aaliyah Morales and Emma Ahlstrom with two hits apiece. Eighth-grader Eliza Bautista collected her first varsity hit as well.

Alyson Canfield had two hits for the Red & Green (0-2, 0-2).

DRAGONS HOLD OFF BEARS

FREWSBURG — Maple Grove scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break up a 7-7 tie and then held off Frewsburg for an 11-9 Division 2 West victory.

The Red Dragons led 3-0 after the first inning, but then fell behind until tying the game at 7-all in the fourth. It stayed that way until the final inning.

After Maple Grove took a four-run lead in the seventh, the Bears scored twice, and had runners at second and third with one out, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.

Alex Caldwell had two hits, including a double; Dani Trim had two hits; and Megan McGee doubled for the Red Dragons. Lydia Darr threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and four walks in the circle.

Paige Whippo went 4 for 4 with a triple to lead the Frewsburg offense. Skylar Waid added two hits, while Teghan Trocki and Teagan Nazario combined for six strikeouts and two walks in the circle.

GRUBER LIFTS HORNETS

FORESTVILLE — Behind the strong pitching of Megan Gruber, Forestville ran its record to 2-0 with a 9-4 nonleague victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley.

Gruber struck out 12 and scattered six hits, and received offensive support from Carilene Sliwa (two doubles, RBI) and Jade Work (two singles, RBI).

For the Timberwolves (1-2), Madison Rogan (triple) and Riley Preston both had two hits.

EAGLES WIN D2 WEST SHOWDOWN

WESTFIELD — A two-run first inning was plenty for Chautauqua Lake, which rode the right arm of Cayzlee Johnson to a 5-0 shutout of Westfield in Division 2 West action.

Johnson threw a complete-game seven-hitter with 12 strikeouts and just one walk. She also went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Eagles (2-1, 2-0).

Jillian Miller and Lucy Gates had the only other hits off Westfield starter Eva Gnadzinski, who tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks.

Drew Ernewein had two doubles and Gnadzinski had two singles for the Wolverines (2-2, 2-1).
