Stenstrom Achieves Perfection At JBC

Erik Stenstrom admitted “his whole body was shaking” as he stood on the approach on Lane 4 at Jamestown Bowling Company last Saturday.

“It was really nerve-racking,” the 15-year-old Kennedy resident said.

That’s understandable.

Bowling in the Junior-Majors Division in the junior bowling league at the Foote Avenue establishment, the son of Alan and Alyssa Stenstrom had already thrown 11 consecutive strikes and needed one more to record a 300 game, the sport’s ultimate prize.

Wearing a Falconer Central School bowling T-shirt with his last name stenciled on the back, Stenstrom took four steps, let the ball go and watched it hit the pocket perfectly. When all the pins fell, he turned and gave a fist pump, was quickly greeted by his father and they shared an embrace.

“I was just trying to slow things down the third game and capitalize on the stuff I picked up from the first and second games,” Stenstrom said.

In his first two games, he rolled a 151 and 179, but made the necessary adjustments for his final game, allowing him to finish with a 630 series, which was eclipsed only by Nicolas Houston, who hit a 181-276-225-682 in the Junior-Majors Division weekly scores.

“I took a step back where I was originally standing from the second game and then I tried to slow my motion down to get a feel of the ball coming off my hand,” said Stenstrom, a freshman at FCS. “Then I just focused on my mark and everything went down.”

The perfect game surpassed his previous single-game best of 277, which he rolled for the Falconer high school team during the second week of the season. Coincidentally, the Golden Falcons’ bowling banquet was held Wednesday night at Fenner Elementary School where he could share his big news with his teammates.

“They were really excited,” said Stenstrom, who has been a varsity bowler for three years. “I’ve been kind of under their wing and being their last (season), they were really excited for me.”

Stenstrom’s 300 game also set a JBC junior bowling record. At 15 years, 66 days old, he became the youngest to reach perfection in the program’s history, according to spokesman Jeremy Becker. Alex Foti owned the previous mark when he tossed a 300 when he was 15 years, 69 days. For his effort, Stenstrom will receive a ring that he can personalize with the record-setting date and his initials.
