TROY — Frewsburg sisters Jadyn and Teghan Trocki combined for 51 points last Saturday.

Duanesburg wasn’t about to let that happen Thursday.

Not with a trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association title game on the line.

Siena College-bound Allison O’Hanlon scored 21 points and the Eagles held the Trockis to just 14 as the Section II champions beat the Bears 54-51 in Thursday’s first Class C semifinal at Hudson Valley Community College’s McDonough Sports Complex.

“This is a team that is senior-heavy,” Duanesburg head coach Chris Herron said of his Eagles. “They’ve got a plan that they want to stick to and there was nothing that was going to stop them.”

The loss ended Frewsburg’s season with a 21-4 record that included the program’s sixth Section VI championship and first Far West Regional title.

“They are a bunch of seniors who have been here before,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said of the Eagles. “We’ve never in school history been here. We got a little bit of experience. What are we going to do to check our last two boxes next year to get the ultimate goal?”

Duanesburg will play for its first state title today at 5:15 p.m. against Section IV’s Moravia, which beat Section I’s Tuckahoe 54-42 in Thursday’s second semifinal.

“Enjoy the moment,” Herron said. “You can never lose sight of the moment, but we’re not done.”

The Eagles led 48-39 over the Bears entering the fourth quarter before Frewsburg climbed back in the game.

Junior Ava Jimerson opened the period with a bucket and her twin sister Taytum Jimerson drew a charge before sophomore Abery Harvey – who finished with a career-high 15 points – scored through contact to pull the Bears within five.

“I don’t think that they were prepared for her. They had a girl that was a little bit too small guarding her at first,” Beaver said of Harvey’s performance. ” … That opened up other opportunities for us to score. … She was huge for us.”

Taytum Jimerson then drilled a 3-pointer and Harvey scored again to tie the game at 48-all.

“We said it would be a game of runs. … We knew we could score fast,” Beaver said. ” … I was hoping we’d make the run and we did. We got right back in it.”

But Duanesburg, which reached the state final four two years ago and features five seniors on its roster, answered quickly.

One of those seniors, Hannah Mulhern, scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Eagles a 52-48 lead midway through the quarter.

“This team was going to go on a run. This team can score in bunches. We just have to weather it, get a couple back,” Herron said. “Hannah went to the basket a couple times and got a couple big layups for us down the stretch.”

Mulhern scored again with Frewsburg in the midst of a scoreless stretch that lasted seven trips up the floor before Bears freshman Jadyn Trocki converted a three-point play with 1:02 remaining to make it 54-51.

Frewsburg then defended for 34 seconds of the shot clock before committing a foul to give Duanesburg a fresh possession with 22.9 seconds remaining. But the Eagles turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play giving Frewsburg an opportunity to tie in the final 20 seconds.

“Ava played great defense all night long. She was on their best player for a long time,” Beaver said. “Ava battled all night long and came up with a huge play at the end.”

After a timeout, a rushed 3-point attempt missed, but Harvey grabbed an offensive rebound to give the Bears one final chance.

Junior Teghan Trocki, who made a pair of 3-pointers early in the game, was the target for the final shot, but she was covered and passed to her sister, Jadyn, whose shot from the top of the arc just missed at the buzzer.

“Out of the timeout we drew up a play that would get either Teghan or Jadyn a look. … We went to our second reverse option,” Beaver said. ” … Any day that you tell me I have one of those two girls shoot a 3-pointer for us to win a game, I’ll take it. It just didn’t fall. That happens.”

“You have to tip your hat to Frewsburg. Great team, great coach,” Herron said. “I’ll tell you what, they’ll be here next year.”
