Falconer Captures Class B2 Championship
BUFFALO – For the first time in more than 40 years, Falconer’s boys basketball team can scream from the mountaintops, “We are champions.”
The fifth-seeded Golden Falcons knocked off No. 2 Eden 59-47 in the Section VI Class B2 title game Saturday at Buffalo State Sports Arena.
The win, which gave Falconer its first sectional crown since 1982, advances it into the Class B crossover game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Class B1 champ Salamanca, which upended Newfane, 61-43, also on Saturday.
Leading the way for the Golden Falcons (15-9) was Zach Markham with 16 points, including nine in the third quarter. Roger Markham had 15, Mathis Baehr added 10 and Nathan Bailey contributed 9.
Falconer led almost the entire way, settled for a 26-22 lead at halftime and had a 40-33 advantage after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Golden Falcons pushed their advantage to as many as 15 to cruise to the monumental program win.
Falconer, under the direction of head coach Jordan Goold, will return to Buffalo State on Tuesday as it looks to continue quite a turnaround from just a few years ago.
