Dunkirk/SC Relay Takes 9th On Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND — Dunkirk/Silver Creek’s 1,600-meter relay team placed ninth in the preliminary round at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track and field championships Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Dunkirk/Silver Creek finished Heat 3 in 3:26.90, which left its quartet just outside the top eight, which is required to advance to the finals.

Michael Hanlon opened with a split of 52.78, followed by Nathan Carlson’s 51.73. Johnee Thomas then turned in a 51.51 and Lucas Lawrie finished the relay with a 50.88 split.

Newburgh Free Academy won the title in 3:19.48, nearly 4 seconds faster than second-place Minisink Valley.

Running in Heat 7 of the 300-meter dash, Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph senior Talon Rowland ran a time of 35.26 seconds for a personal best, which was good for 15th. In Heat 2 of the same event, Jamestown junior Jarren Cotter ran a time of 36.48 seconds, which was good for 30th. Neither advanced to the final, which required a top-12 preliminary finish.

Fordham Prep senior Jaylin Santiago won the 300-meter dash with a time of 33.92 seconds.

Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph junior Cody Kent placed 28th in the 3,200-meter run with a personal-best time of 9:43.45 in Heat 1.

The top-12 finishers all came from Heat 2 with Ithaca junior Riley Hubisz the winner in 9:01.42.

Sweet Home junior Brenton Baker won the boys high jump at 6 feet, 9 inches.

Frontier junior Lillie Bodgan took second in the girls 1,500 meters with a time of 4:30.47 and third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:27.75.

Sweet Home junior Taylor Nugent was second in the girls 1,500-meter race walk with a time of 6:53.57.
