Johnson Comes Alive In 4th As Jamestown Takes Down St. Francis
BUFFALO — Jaydian Johnson scored 14 of his game-high 22 points during the fourth quarter as Jamestown beat St. Francis 66-59 in the opening game of the Centercourt Classic on Friday evening at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.
The Red & Green trailed by one entering the final eight minutes before outscoring the Red Raiders 27-19. Dominic Gonzalez added 8 points, including a 3-pointer, during the quarter for Jamestown.
“Jaydian started making some shots that he normally makes and he got to the foul line,” Jamestown head coach Billy Miley said. “Between him and Dom, they hit a coupl3 of 3s in the fourth that kind of broke it open.”
Jeremiah Neely led St. Francis (7-10, 4-4 Monsignor Martin) with 18 points and Nicholas Bienko had 10.
“They do a really good job of having five guys on the floor who are a threat,” Miley said of the Red Raiders. “They play incredibly hard and make you work offensively to find shots.”
St. Francis led 11-10 after the first quarter and 24-23 at halftime.
“Our shots weren’t falling and we didn’t really do a good job on the defensive glass,” Miley said of the first half. “In the second half, we cleaned it up and were able to knock down some shots at the other end.”
Johnson had eight rebounds and four assists; Gonzalez had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists; and Bishop Butts had 9 points and six rebounds for the Red & Green (15-2, 7-0 ECIC D1), who host Williamsville North on Tuesday at McElrath Gymnasium.
In the junior varsity game, Hunter Johnson poured in 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Jamestown to a 73-52 victory. The Red & Green are now 11-4.
