The record-setting season for the Frewsburg/Falconer/Jamestown/Southwestern boys swimming & diving team continued Thursday.

Taking on Panama/Clymer in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association meet at the Jamestown High School pool, the Bears set two pool records on Senior Night.

Sophomore Grady Moore, senior Aidan McCleery, junior Conner Dean and sophomore Miles Moore set those marks in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays with state-qualifying times of 1:29.56 and 3:17.27 respectively.

“We kind of gun for those relays,” Bears head coach Bruce Johnson said. “We wanted to get Orchard Park off the record board. I think we would have in all three relays, but our breastroker slipped on the start of the medley (relay). Usually, he splits a 27 and he split a 31, and we missed (the record) by a second and a half. We would have taken that (record) down, too.

“The kids have been working hard, putting in a lot of time and effort.”

All told, the Bears won all but one event on an evening when they honored seniors McCleery, Noah Miles, Owen Slojkowski, Jack Osborne, Harrison Eckert, Ethan Swan and Xander Pitts.

Frewsburg/Falconer/Jamestown/Southwestern’s dominance was evident weeks ago when it held its first meet at the Southwestern Elementary School pool and set seven school records. Clearly, the merging of the four programs has paid dividends.

“We knew that Aidan McCleery was at Falconer and we knew Conner Dean was at Jamestown. We didn’t go looking for them,” said Johnson, who began his coaching career at Frewsburg 46 years ago. “Last spring I got a call from (Jamestown athletic director) Ben Drake (about merging) and I told Nancy (Johnson’s wife), ‘I’ve been waiting for that call.'”

Next on the schedule is the CCAA Championships, which will be held Feb. 2 at Olean, followed by the Class A Championships Feb. 8-10 at Clarence. The Section VI state qualifier is Feb. 14-15 at the University at Buffalo and the state meet is set for March 1-2 at Ithaca.

“We think we have a shot to win a (public school) relay or two at the state meet,” Johnson said. ” … A lot of factors have to come into play. We have to stay healthy, we have to have a good couple weeks and we have to have a good taper, which is on my shoulders.”

If they go as well as the first seven weeks, well anything is possible.

“We knew we would be pretty loaded,” Johnson said. “I think we have passed our expectations.”

NOTES: The lone victory for the Panthers was by freshman Owen Johnson, who posted a 1:24.04 in the 100-yard breaststroke, just edging Miles, who swam a 1:24.13. … The Bears’ Levi Overend, Jimmy Mitchener and Logan Johnson all had best times, with Johnson qualifying for the Section VI meet in the 100 backstroke; Miles Moore and Landon Frederes also qualified for the Section VI meet in the 200-yard individual medley; Grady Moore met a qualifying standard in the 50-yard freestyle, while Lincoln Bockrath and Mitchener had personal bests in those events; and, finally, every Frewsburg/Falconer/Jamestown/Southwestern exhibition/junior varsity swimmer in the 100-yard freestyle swam a personal best.
